Oak Ridge Peace Forum donates $7,500 to Rotary Peace Centers

Oak Ridge Peace Forum Donates to Rotary Foundation

The Oak Ridge Peace Forum has donated $7,500 of its net proceeds to the Peace Centers Endowment of The Rotary Foundation.

“The Rotary Peace Centers offer an avenue for extending peace activities throughout the world through its growing cadre of Peace Fellows,” said Fred Heitman, chair of the Peace Forum planning committee, which decided in early April to make the donation.

The Oak Ridge Peace Forum is sponsored by Rotary District 6780, which is now led by District Governor Jack Bailey of Oak Ridge.

More than 250 people attended the Peace Forum on March 9 in Pollard Auditorium. The planning committee consisted mostly of representatives of three Rotary clubs in Oak Ridge. [Read more…]

‘Talk is Cheap’ on Saturday to feature ‘down-home wit,’ wisdom, laughs

An event organized this weekend by the Clinton Rotary Club and Timely Topics will feature “down-home wit and wisdom, with lots of laughs along the way,” a press release said.

It’s called “The Talk is Cheap Tour,” and it features Jim Claborn, Bill Landry, Sam Venable, and Elizabeth Rose.

It starts at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Ritz Theater in Clinton. General admission tickets are $15, and VIP tickets are $25. The VIP tickets include preferred seating and a reception at the Clinton Civic Center to meet the performers and friends, the press release said. [Read more…]

Jazmyne Maddox, a freshman at Oak Ridge High School, was named “Youth of the Year” for the Boys and Girls Club. The highest honor a member can receive, this title recognizes outstanding contributions to a member’s family, school, community, and Boys and Girls Club, as well as personal challenges and obstacles to overcome. She was selected to compete against other members for the Tennessee “Youth of the Year” title.

As the “Youth of the Year” for the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Clinch Valley, Maddox is among hundreds of local youth across the country recognized by Boys and Girls Clubs of America for their sound character, leadership skills, and willingness to give back to the community. The Oak Ridge Breakfast Rotary Club recently made a donation to the Emory Valley Center Capital Campaign.

The capital campaign is raising money to help replace an Emory Valley Center building on Emory Valley Road. The center is raising money to replace the 55-year-old building, which will be demolished.

The Emory Valley Center serves intellectually and developmentally disabled children and adults in East Tennessee.

Gene Caldwell and Dottie Thompson are co-chairing the capital campaign. Anyone wishing to donate may do so by mailing a contribution to P.O. Box 5328, Oak Ridge, TN 37831, or by going online to www.emoryvalleycenter.com.

Civitan Club has membership lunch Wednesday

The Civitan Club of Clinton will hold its annual membership lunch at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Shoney’s Restaurant near Interstate 75 in Clinton.

Oak Ridge Kiwanis President Mark Hembree recently presented a check from Enrichment Federal Credit Union employees for the Emory Valley Early Learning Center to EVC employees Kim Perkins and Georgia Brownfield.

The money will be used by the Early Learning Center.

It’s part of a Kiwanis service project, a press release said. The check presentation occurred after a program at the March 12 Kiwanis meeting. During that program, Perkins and Brownfield talked about the Emory Valley Center, the press release said.

Oak Ridge Boys Club alumni have kickoff party Friday

The Oak Ridge Boys Club Alumni Association has their annual membership drive and kickoff party at Lincoln’s Sports Grille at 7 p.m. Friday.

The alumni have been an essential part of helping the local Boys and Girls Club of Oak Ridge during the last four decades, with recent efforts including the purchase of a 15-passenger van for transporting children to the club from school, a press release said.

Nelson, EVC supported employment coordinator, will discuss community workplace accommodations made at the center and in the community to allow agency clients to be employed.

Rotary International president visits Oak Ridge for peace forum

When Rotary International President Sakuji Tanaka of Japan visits Oak Ridge on Friday and Saturday, he will talk about and hear innovative ideas on how to achieve peace through service.

On Friday, Thom Mason, director of Oak Ridge National Laboratory, will give Tanaka a tour of ORNL. At 3 p.m., the RI president will tour the Secret City Commemorative Walk built by the Rotary Club of Oak Ridge. City Manager Mark Watson, who is president-elect of this Rotary club, will present a gift to Tanaka, who will make some remarks.

At 3:45 p.m. Tanaka will then visit the International Friendship Bell, where he will be welcomed by Oak Ridger Jack Bailey, district governor of RI District 6780, which encompasses 65 clubs in East Tennessee. Shigeko Uppuluri will present a history of the bell and give a bell replica to Tanaka, who will make remarks and ring the bell.

Why is Rotary International president coming here?

For the second time since Rotary International was born in 1905 in Chicago, a sitting RI president will visit Oak Ridge. He will serve as keynote speaker and hear innovative ideas at the Oak Ridge Peace Forum on Saturday, March 9, at Oak Ridge Associated Universities’ Pollard Auditorium.

The only other time a sitting RI president spoke in Oak Ridge was in 2000 when Frank Devlyn of Mexico came here. Why will RI President Sakuji Tanaka of Japan be in Oak Ridge Mar. 8-10?

Elks donate $1,500 to three local charities

The Oak Ridge Chapter of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks has donated $1,500 to three local charities, a press release said.

On Thursday, Jan. 24, members of the Elks Lodge annual charity golf tournament committee met with the directors of the Free Medical Clinic of Oak Ridge, and the Emory Valley Center, along with volunteer staff members at the Holiday Bureau, in order to present each of them with a $500 check, the release said.
