TVC announces sessions, speakers for 2016 Summit at Tennessee Tech

On June 1-2, more than 300 community, academic, and government leaders from the five-state region will gather at Tennessee Tech University for the 2016 Tennessee Valley Corridor Summit to focus attention on the vital role entrepreneurs provide in turning the brain power and technologies from the region’s universities and federal programs into new business start-ups and the expansion of existing businesses.

The Summit is themed “Where Entrepreneurs and Technology Meet.” The event will be hosted by Tennessee Tech University President Phil Oldham in cooperation with U.S. Representative Diane Black.

Big Ed’s Memorial Golf Tournament on April 29 helps Community Mediation Services

You can start your golf tournament season in April and help a nonprofit organization that helps young people and families. The 15th Annual Big Ed’s Memorial Golf Tournament on Friday, April 29, will benefit Community Mediation Services of Anderson Country.

The golf tournament will be held at the Oak Ridge Country Club. The ORCC Golf Course provides a “beautiful and challenging setting for golfers as well as allowing participants a great way to give back to the community through Community Mediation Services’ work with youths and families,” a press release said.

The tournament is a two-session, scramble format with two flights: 8 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. A new Chevrolet, provided by Sexton Automotive Group, will be the grand prize for the hole-in-one, the press release said. Complimentary continental breakfasts, beverage carts, and a smoked barbecue lunch, as well as prize contests for golfers, will be available. Free shirts for all golfers are included.

The early registration deadline is Friday, April 22. You can register early for $100 per player and $400 per team, and for $125 per player and $500 per team after April 22 or at the door. [Read more…]

ORNL associate lab director to discuss discovery of elements 115, 117; super-heavy nuclei; ‘island of stability’

Jim Roberto, an associate laboratory director at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, will discuss the discovery of elements 115 and 117, super-heavy nuclei, and the “island of stability” during a Wednesday evening talk next week.

Roberto, ORNL associate laboratory director for science and technology partnerships, will give the featured talk to the ORION astronomy club at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 16. The talk will be at the Grove Theater at 123 Randolph Road in Oak Ridge.

Roberto’s talk is titled “The Discovery of Elements 115 and 117: SuperHeavy Nuclei and the ‘Island of Stability.'” Roberto will review recent progress in super-heavy element research with particular focus on the significance of element 117 and its decay products as evidence for the existence of the presumed “island of stability” for super-heavy nuclei, a press release said. Whether you’re out for an early-morning walk or driving home from work along Melton Hill Lake, it is clear to see that rowing season has begun in Oak Ridge. Rowing teams from all over the northern United States and parts of Canada are beginning to arrive in Oak Ridge for spring training and racing.

This weekend, the University of Louisville will host its annual Cardinal Invitational Regatta. Twelve of the nation’s best NCAA Division I women’s rowing teams will compete on March 12-13 at the Oak Ridge Rowing Association on Melton Hill Lake.

The Oak Ridge Lady Wildcats will play Dyer County in the quarterfinals of the state girls basketball tournament on Wednesday.

The 2016 BlueCross Basketball Championship is scheduled on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday for the Division I Class AAA girls teams. It’s at the Murphy Center at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro.

The game between Oak Ridge and Dyer County on Wednesday is the first Class AAA quarterfinal game of the day. It starts at 10 a.m. Central time.

Oak Ridge, the number one seed in District 3, has a 27-4 record. The Lady Wildcats beat Dobyns-Bennett, the number one seed in District 1, 39-32 in a Class AAA sectional game on Saturday to advance to the state tournament for the first time since 2010. [Read more…]

Habitat for Humanity of Anderson County is hosting the Harlem Ambassadors Basketball Show on Thursday, March 24, at Oak Ridge High School. This show is not only entertaining, organizers said, it also brings an important message to kids: “Stay off drugs, stay in school, don’t be a bully!”

The show starts at 6 p.m. March 24 at Wildcat Arena.

“Habitat for Humanity of Anderson County is so very appreciative of the businesses that are sponsoring this event,” a press release said. They include Life Safety Inspections, ORAU, MS Technology, Thrivent Financial, SL Industries, ORNL Federal Credit Union, A-Plus Concrete, Techmer PM, TNBank, Orthopaedic Surgeons of Oak Ridge, Tracy Larabee CPA, BWSC, Stoller, LEIDOS, Krogers, and J&M’s Butcher Shop.

City will clean sewer lines near restaurants this month, could cause traffic delays

The Oak Ridge Public Works Department will clean sewer lines near restaurants during the next two weeks, and the work could cause traffic delays because roads and intersections could be temporarily closed, officials said.

The work is scheduled during the weeks of March 7 and March 14.

“Please use extreme caution and allow extra time when driving in areas where city workers are present,” a press release said. [Read more…]

The Oliver Springs Board of Aldermen—the Town Council—met Thursday night for the first time since Mayor Jerry Vann surprised everyone by announcing his resignation.

Vice Mayor Omer Cox is serving as mayor on an interim basis, and it is not clear yet if he wants to have the “interim” tag removed and be considered as Vann’s successor until the next election.

The Board took no action on the matter on Thursday night, instead deciding to have interested applicants submit their resumes to City Manager Becky Campbell by the end of the business day on Monday, March 14. That will give the Aldermen a chance to review the candidates before their next meeting on Thursday, March 17, when a decision could be made. [Read more…]

Children’s Museum hosts exhibit of Historic Norris Dam photos

The Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge will host the opening of an exhibition by Harvey Towns commemorating the 80th anniversary of the completion of Norris Dam. The opening reception will be from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, March 6, at the Children’s Museum, which is at 461 West Outer Drive. Refreshments will be provided.

On March 4, 1936, the outlet conduit gates in Norris Dam were closed and the storage of water in the reservoir began. This exhibit displays rare and historic photographs of construction leading up to that event. Norris Dam, hydroelectric facility, was the first dam built by the Tennessee Valley Authority.

In March 2015, a cache of original panorama photographs taken by contract photographer Rell Clements to document construction of the dam was discovered at the Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge by Exhibit Director Margaret Allard. Because of the age and fragile condition of the photographs, an effort to digitize and reproduce modern copies was begun. [Read more…]

Coal Creek Miners Museum has grand opening on March 11

The Coal Creek Miners Museum in Rocky Top will celebrate its grand opening with a ribbon-cutting on March 11.

The museum tells the story of the miners that lived, worked, and died in Coal Creek, Fraterville, and Briceville, and it also tells about the historically significant events that changed the mining industry, a press release said.

The grand opening is scheduled from 2-5 p.m. March 11 at the new museum, which is at 201 South Main Street in Rocky Top (formerly known as Lake City). The ribbon-cutting with the Rocky Top Chamber of Commerce is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

Oak Ridge Schools has a community tour on March 9. It will include visits to elementary, middle school, or high school classrooms.

The tour is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 9.

“See how Oak Ridge teachers and students are teaching and learning while school is in session,” a press release said. “The day will begin at the Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce, then will proceed through an elementary and middle or middle and high school classroom visits.” [Read more…]
