It’s an extravaganza for the Halloween season that features a cast of 130 singers, dancers, musicians, and actors, and it’s growing in popularity.
It’s the annual “Kindred Spirits†production, with performances at 1 and 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 27, in the O’Brien Theatre on Roane State Community College’s main campus at 276 Patton Lane in Harriman. Admission is $5.
“It’s one of the highlights of our year,†said Professor Brenda Luggie, Roane State’s choral director. “The music students absolutely love it.â€
The hour-long, family-friendly show features Roane State music students, actors from Midway High School’s Drama Club, and about 100 dancers of all ages from Arts in Motion, with studios in Rockwood and Kingston. [Read more…]
The touring play, “Sergeant York: The Play,” will be presented in Oak Ridge on Friday and Saturday, and proceeds will benefit hurricane relief in Puerto Rico.
The play will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Friday, August 17, and at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, August 18, in the Multi-Purpose Room at First United Methodist Church.
It’s a one-man show starring Greg Helton as Sergeant York, and it was written and directed by Lisa Soland.
Sergeant York grew up on a farm in Pall Mall, Tennessee, and he was the most highly decorated veteran of World War I, a press release said.
It said Soland did two years of research to put the play together, and it will travel across the United States. [Read more…]

The Roane State Playmakers will be presenting a Pulitzer prize-winning play, “Crimes of the Heart,” by Beth Henley, this month at the O’Brien Theatre on Roane State’s Roane County campus.
Director Jon Chemay called the play a “Southern Gothic Drama†in the vein of Tennessee Williams or Harper Lee. He said, “There are some heavy elements to this play, but they are presented with a sense of humor distinct to the southern family.â€
The play takes place in the small town of Hazlehurst, Mississippi, where the three Magrath sisters await news about their grandfather, living out his final hours in the local hospital. One sister, unmarried at 30, faces diminishing martial prospects, another has returned home after a failed singing career, and the third sibling is out on bail after shooting her husband in the stomach.
Their troubles, grave and yet, somehow, hilarious, are highlighted by their priggish cousin, by one sister’s old flame, and by the awkward young lawyer who tries to keep the youngest sister out of jail while helpless not to fall in love with her. [Read more…]

Oak Ridge High School Masquers, the school’s drama program, will present “The Music Man,” the classic musical, in four performances in March.
The performances are scheduled for Friday, March 2, at 7 p.m.; Saturday, March 3, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.; and Sunday, March 4, at 2 p.m. at the Oak Ridge Performing Arts Center.
Advance tickets are $8, and they are available at the ORHS office and The Ferrell Shop. At the door, tickets will be $10 for adults and $9 for student-aged children, a press release said.
Under the direction of Dana Wham—who has directed, choreographed, or acted in numerous adult and children productions throughout the region—this year’s “The Music Man” continues the ORHS Masquers tradition of bringing excellent performances, impressive sets, amazing orchestration, and technical panache to the stage, the press release said. It’s an update of a classic comedy about a slob and a neat freak living together in disharmony, but this time the characters are female.
It’s Neil Simon’s “The Odd Couple (Female Version),” and the curtain went up on the Roane State Community College Playmakers’ adaptation on Friday, November 10, for a two-week run in the O’Brien Theatre on the college’s main campus in Harriman.
“I’ve been wanting to do a Neil Simon play for a while,†said Jonathan Chemay, Roane State theatre technician, who’s directed three other recent Playmakers productions. “I think (Simon) was a comedic genius.â€
Simon’s update of his contemporary classic, about slovenly Oscar Madison and obsessive Felix Unger, was rewritten by the playwright two decades after his original version premiered.
The original Odd Couple featured Felix and Oscar hosting a poker game with four guys as guests. In the female version, Florence and Olive have a get-together with four girlfriends for a night of “Trivial Pursuit.†[Read more…]

Oak Ridge High School Masquers, the school’s drama program, will present David Bottrell and Jessie Jones’ Southern comedy “Dearly Departed” for three performances this week.
The performances are scheduled for Thursday, November 9, at 7 p.m.; Saturday, November 11, at 7 p.m.; and Sunday, November 12, at 2 p.m., at the Oak Ridge High School Performing Arts Center.
“Dearly Departed” is the story of the dysfunctional Turpins’ struggle with the death of the family patriarch, a press release said. Ray-Bud starts drinking as the funeral costs keep rising, Junior tries balancing his terrible children, finances, and marriage, and Delightful buries herself in food as the siblings prepare to bury their father. Turning to their neighbors in this time of need, eccentrics and misfits appear ready to help, but rarely successfully. This southern-fried comedy is sure to please as the Turpins try to honor a man whose wife wants the words “Mean and Surly†inscribed on the grave marker. [Read more…]

It’s a seasonal extravaganza that promises something for everyone.
It’s the 2017 edition of “Kindred Spirits,†with performances at 1 and 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 28, in the O’Brien Theatre on Roane State’s main campus in Harriman.
There’s drama, dancing, costume parades for all ages, and Halloween trick-or-treating, all rolled up in one fast-paced hour of entertainment, Roane State music professor Brenda Luggie said.
“Kindred Spirits†is a collaboration between the college’s music department, Cumberland County High School’s Jet Theatrix Drama Club, and the Arts in Motion Dance Studios, with locations in Midtown and Rockwood. [Read more…]

This summer, youth will have the opportunity to be inspired by local talent to explore their creativity and surround themselves with fellow thespians. Oak Ridge Junior Playhouse is pleased to connect the theater community by offering this experience to learn in a workshop setting with its summer theater camp for youth from rising third grade through rising 12th.
Adra Cooper, camp director, said her experience with theater with young people has led her to value its positive effects.
“I have seen introverted students, who barely speak or look you in the eye, become talkative and confident young adults after finding confidence on stage,†Cooper said, adding that she thoroughly enjoyed the Oak Ridge Junior Playhouse theater camp last year. “I especially enjoyed watching the kids grow in their confidence.”
Cooper brings a wealth of experience from working with youth as a drama teacher, director, and past camp director, a press release said. Campers will also benefit from the creative talent and love of theater from camp assistants Adam Moreno and Josh Farner. Both young men grew up doing theater in Oak Ridge and Knoxville and are excited to share their enthusiasm with the Playhouse campers, the press release said.

Moreno, assistant camp instructor, was very involved in Oak Ridge High School’s drama group, the Masquers. Adam continued his education and graduated with a degree in theater (specializing in acting) in 2016 from Middle Tennessee State University.
“Theater gives you a number of skills you can’t get in any other one platform,†Moreno said. “It teaches you to work with others (even if you don’t get along), to speak in front of a crowd, to listen to others, to take constructive criticism, and much more.â€
Farner, also an assistant camp instructor, was a frequent participant at the Oak Ridge Junior Playhouse growing up both as an actor and as a crew member. Warner currently attends the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, and he is majoring in producing, directing, and playwriting. Farner attended the Oak Ridge Junior Playhouse summer camps himself, so he’s especially excited to return as an instructor. [Read more…]

The Oak Ridge Civic Ballet Association will present “Beauty and the Beast†and “The Firebird†on Saturday.
You will also have a chance to meet “Belle” and her royal friends at the Princess Tea Party on Saturday.
Both events are at Oak Ridge High School. The Princess Tea Party is Saturday morning, April 8, and the shows are Saturday afternoon and evening.
“Beauty and the Beast,†is the classic tale of an arrogant prince who is turned into a hideous Beast until he learns to love and be loved in return, a press release said. Directed and choreographed by Sharon Nicklow-Cousins and Sarah Jett, the talented dancers of the Civic Ballet bring to life Belle, the Beast, and their castle servants.

The musical adaptation of Charles Dickens’ famous novel, “Oliver Twist,†comes to Roane State’s O’Brien Theater for only three performances in a rare collaboration of the college’s Music and Theatre Arts departments.
The curtain goes up on Lionel Bart’s “Oliver!†at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, April 21 and 22, and at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 23.
It’s the story of a 9-year-old orphan and his misadventures, from being half-starved in a workhouse and famously asking for more gruel, to learning how to be a pickpocket on the gritty streets of 19th century London.
Memorable songs abound, from “Where Is Love?†to “Food Glorious Food†and “It’s a Fine Life.â€
