First United Methodist Church Sergeant York The Play 0818 500x333

The touring play, “Sergeant York: The Play,” will be presented in Oak Ridge on Friday and Saturday, and proceeds will benefit hurricane relief in Puerto Rico.

The play will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Friday, August 17, and at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, August 18, in the Multi-Purpose Room at First United Methodist Church.

It’s a one-man show starring Greg Helton as Sergeant York, and it was written and directed by Lisa Soland.

Sergeant York grew up on a farm in Pall Mall, Tennessee, and he was the most highly decorated veteran of World War I, a press release said.

It said Soland did two years of research to put the play together, and it will travel across the United States.

“This play will be performed in New York City in November, commemorating the anniversary of World War I,” the press release said. “Come see it in Sergeant York’s home state first!”

The play will be hosted by First United Methodist Missions.

All the proceeds from the show will be used to benefit hurricane relief in Puerto Rico, the press release said.

“The FUMC Missions team is raising money to buy needed construction materials and hire workers in Puerto Rico to do rebuilding there—hoping to help with their economy while offering relief,” the press release said.

Deborah York, executive director of the Sergeant York Patriotic Foundation and great granddaughter of Alvin York, said about the play: “‘Sergeant York: The Play’ is wonderful. Playwright Lisa Soland has really captured the heart and soul of what my great grandfather, Alvin York, was all about. She’s done extensive research, not only on Sergeant York, but interviews with the family, spending a lot of time in Pall Mall, getting to know the culture and the family, and the story about the man behind the medals. This play captures Sergeant York’s loyalty to God and country, and his service to the community. It’s simply a wonderful play.”

Tickets are $15 and available at New Reflections at 987 Oak Ridge Turnpike from 1 to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday (call (865) 482-4711 and ask for Sandi Wright). They are also available online at www.fumcor.org/missions. At the bottom of the page under Upcoming Events, click on Sergeant York: The Play and follow the directions.
