“Pandora’s Promise,” a new film about environmentalists’ support of nuclear energy as a solution to global climate change, will be shown in a limited Knoxville engagement this week, starting today (Friday, July 19) and ending Thursday, a media advisory said.

The Anderson County Fair officially kicks off this evening and will run through Saturday on the Fairgrounds in Clinton. Gates open at 5 p.m. today, and children ages 17 and under will get in for free.
In addition, if you can find Kubota of Knoxville owner Ron Krise at the Fair, he has purchased 100 armbands that will allow kids to ride the rides on the midway all night long. The midway opens at 6 p.m. and those armbands will be $20. [Read more…]

Tickets are now on sale for M*A*S*H Bash 2013, Oak Ridge’s one-of-a-kind fundraiser for the Free Medical Clinic of Oak Ridge.
The fun-filled event, fashioned after the M*A*S*H television series, is set for Saturday, Aug. 10, in the Parish Life Center of St. Mary’s Church.
Included in the $60 per person ticket price will be a buffet dinner, door prizes, silent and live auctions. and dancing to the classic rock sounds of the Second Opinion band. [Read more…]

Secret City Sounds continues its Summer Concert Series with The Red Hot Horn Dawgs on Friday, July 19. The concert will begin at 7 p.m. at the Oak Ridge Civic Center Pavilion located at 1403 Oak Ridge Turnpike.
The Red Hot Horn Dawgs are a nine-piece band with a full horn section and extroverted showmen, and the group’s musical library spans the best years of American popular music, from Otis Redding and Elvis Presley to Billy Joel, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Kid Rock, and Toby Keith, a press release said. Y-12 Federal Credit Union is hosting a Teen Battle of the Bands at 6 p.m. July 20 at the A.K. Bissell Park Pavilion behind the Oak Ridge Civic Center.
This is an all-ages community event, and admission is free. Concessions and T-shirts will be available.

Secret City Sounds continues its Summer Concert Series with The Freight Hoppers at 7 p.m. Friday at A.K. Bissell Park in Oak Ridge.
It’s the second show in the 2013 series, and it’s presented by the Arts Council of Oak Ridge and the City of Oak Ridge.

The Rick Springfield concert at the Secret City Festival on Saturday night was the largest ever for the annual two-day festival, an organizer said.
Final numbers weren’t available Saturday night, but total ticket sales could be somewhere around 3,000, said Joye Montgomery, head of entertainment and tickets and the Secret City Festival representative for the Arts Council of Oak Ridge.

The annual Secret City Festival started today, and it features Manhattan Project bus tours and history displays, World War II living history activities and demonstrations, arts and crafts and antiques dealers, food vendors and exhibitors, a children’s festival area and youth events, and a car show and concerts.
“Join more than 20,000 visitors and residents to celebrate the end of World War II and the heritage of Oak Ridge from 1945 to the present,” a press release said.
Oak Ridge was built during World War II as part of the top-secret Manhattan Project, a federal program to build the world’s atomic bombs, and the festival celebrates the city’s heritage.

“Movie Nights” for Oak Ridge middle school students will be Friday, June 28, at First Presbyterian Church at the corner of Oak Ridge Turnpike and Lafayette Drive. The movie will be “Ramona and Beezus.”
Children ages 10 to 13 are invited to bring their friends to play table games, create crafts, and enjoy pizza and drinks, as well as watch the movie, from 6 to 9 p.m. during the second and fourth Friday of every month, a press release said. [Read more…]

The sleight-of-hand tricks of a magician will be featured at Wonderful Wednesday, from 11 a.m.-noon June 19 at the Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge. Mark Young will bring his entertaining magic show to the museum, delighting children with his magic tricks.
Young was a professional magician for 20 years, working in such locations as the Big Red Boat cruise line of Walt Disney World, Cypress Gardens in Florida, and Opryland in Nashville. The magician began learning tricks as a child in Oak Ridge and has entertained children and adults at past museum events. [Read more…]
