Ahoy, Mates! Tennessee Pirate Fest Invites You!

The fourth annual Tennessee Pirate Fest invites you to go back in time to the “Age of Piracy.” This outdoor daytime interactive entertainment-oriented festival will be held the middle two weekends in October at the Tennessee Medieval Faire site in Harriman–just 30 miles west of Turkey Creek. Patrons will be transported to the fictional Caribbean town of Port Royale in the Tortugas, circa 1685.  

“This year, our characters are loosely based on the movies ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ and ‘Captain Blood,'” said Barrie Paulson, Vice President-Manager and Entertainment Director. “Come meet the Governor of Port Royale and his daughter, British red coats, townspeople, and lots of pirates! Come with a happy heart and sense of adventure, and you’ll have lots of fun.”

Rotating on several stages will be numerous professional acts: Caribbean and Celtic music by Tom Mason and the Blue Buccaneers, Thunder and Spice, The CrossJacks, PanEZ Steelband, Black Mash Hollow, and Timothy Russell. There will be portable benches, but patrons are welcome to bring lawn chairs. Performing interactive comedy or dance shows will be The Tortuga Twins (PG), Einstein Simplified, and Misfit Gypsies. Some acts will be different each weekend, and schedules will be available online and at the entrance.

Oak Ridge Community Band starts season with free concert Sunday

The Oak Ridge Community Band will begin the 2019-2020 indoor concert season with a new venue for October and a new free admission policy.

“Oak Ridge residents are familiar with the tradition of free outdoor concerts during the summer seasons, but now the indoor Community Band concerts will also be free,” a press release said. “As the Community Band’s gift to the Oak Ridge community, there will be no admission fee for ORCB concerts. Instead, the Community Band will rely on donations to help with band expenses.”

The public is encouraged to go online at www.orcb.org to see the 2019-2020 concert schedule from October through April and also to learn how to become a donor to ORCB, the press release said. [Read more…]

Taste of Anderson County is Oct. 17

Taste of Anderson County will be in Jackson Square this month. It’s scheduled from 5-10 p.m. Thursday, October 17.

“The annual food festival and fundraiser for United Way of Anderson County is the perfect way to spend a fall evening, with free activities for the kids, live music, alcohol tastings, and of course, tastes from your favorite local restaurants,” a press release said.

Soup Kitchen, Burchfield’s, Sassy Pants, Volunteer Dogs, Murray’s Oak Ridge, Freddy’s, Sicilia Pizza, Aubrey’s, and Panda Express are just a few of the restaurants to choose from, the press release said.

In addition, several local breweries and distilleries will be at the event to provide tastings. Beer tastings will be provided by Fanatic Brewing; Seven Springs Farm will be offering wine tastings; Sugarlands Distilling Company will have moonshine to sample; and Postmodern Spirits will be providing tastes of some of their vodkas, gins, and whiskeys. Manhattan Project Park: Commemorate tennis court dances in Jackson Square

The Manhattan Project National Historical Park will commemorate the tennis court dances that occurred in Jackson Square 75 years ago with a dance and costume contest in October.

The Tennis Court Dance and Costume Contest is scheduled from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, October 11, in the Jackson Square tennis courts. The free event will feature swing dancing music from the 1940s World War II era.

The National Park Service is partnering with Explore Oak Ridge to host the dance, a press release said.

“All ages are welcome to attend and everyone is encouraged to participate in the costume contest with their best 1940s costume,” the press release said. “One winner will be announced for best individual costume and one for group costumes.”

Summer Sessions is a free concert series featuring bluegrass and American bands from throughout the region. Jim Lauderdale, Steve Gulley and the New Pinnacle, The Travelin’ McCourys, Circus No. 9, Ricky Skaggs, and Kentucky Thunder have also performed during the 2019 concert series.

Storm the Grove will help young musicians and raise money for the historic Grove Theater on Friday.

It’s a spoof of Area 51. Organizers said you can fly out to Nevada in hopes of seeing an alien—or save money, “storm the grove,” and be the alien you want to see. You are welcome to come dressed as your favorite space alien. There will be a cash prize for the best costume, organizers said.

Storm the Grove will spotlight Tennessee bands (musical earthlings): Zack Miles, Chloe Kimes, Nightly, and Drive Thru Therapy. One band is from Nashville, two from Knoxville, and one is based in Oak Ridge.

ADFAC Dine and Donate, plus Photo Contest, on Monday

Enjoy fantastic food, support an important nonprofit organization, and qualify for a $25 gift card—all at the same time—on Monday, August 12.

Several area restaurants are donating a portion of their sales to Aid To Distressed Families of Appalachian Counties, or ADFAC. Participating restaurants are Dean’s, Gallo Loco, Hoskins, Burchfield’s, Mediterranean Delight, Razzleberry’s, The Soup Kitchen, and Subway locations in Clinton, Oak Ridge (1968 Oak Ridge Turnpike), Oliver Springs, and Rocky Top, a press release said.

This month, in addition to enjoying a great meal and helping ADFAC at the same time, there’s an added bonus of a Photo Contest. ADFAC needs fresh, new photos to publicize its monthly Dine & Donate event, the press release said.

Ricky Skaggs and his band Kentucky Thunder will perform on Saturday, August 17, for the next Summer Sessions concert event presented by ORNL Federal Credit Union.

Summer Sessions is a free concert series for the community featuring bluegrass and American bands from throughout the region.

Free Medical Clinic has Boot Scootin’ Bash on Saturday

The best party in town, many attendees have said! A lively dance contest, line dancing lessons, delicious dinner and drinks, as well as delightful auction items. Dance music by popular disc jockey Dave King. Casual attire. 

It’s the Boot Scootin’ Bash of the Free Medical Clinic of Oak Ridge, complete with a Western theme (think boots, saddles, wagon wheels, horses, cowboys, cowgirls, rodeos, and saloons). The bash is the annual fun fundraiser for Free Medical Clinic, which provides no-charge primary care and wellness services to low-income, uninsured residents of Anderson, Morgan, and Roane counties who otherwise would not have access to the medical care they need.

Elaine Graham, the entertaining emcee and 2016 dance contest winner, will run the show. Free Medical Clinic volunteers and staff will present the Boot Scootin’ Bash on Saturday, August 10, from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the Parish Life Center of St. Mary’s Catholic Church at 327 Vermont Avenue.

Oak Ridge Community Band has ‘Best In Summer’ concert Sunday

The Oak Ridge Community Band will perform during a concert at Alvin K. Bissell Park on Sunday, August 4.

It’s the band’s third concert of the summer.

The concert will start at 7 p.m. Sunday.

The Community Band will perform a “Best of Summer” program, which will include swing, jazz, show tunes, and marches. There is no admission fee for the summer concerts, although donations are gratefully accepted to help with expenses, a press release said. [Read more…]

Arts Council asks for help funding arts, music, ballet

The Arts Council of Oak Ridge is asking for your help funding arts, music, ballet, and other organizations.

The Arts Council organizes the United Arts Fund Drive. That helps member organizations that include Oak Ridge Civic Music Association, Oak Ridge Civic Ballet, Oak Ridge Arts Center, Oak Ridge Community Band, Oak Ridge Philharmonia, and Music Arts.

There are also two affiliate organizations, Tennessee Mountain Writters and Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge.

The funds raised through the United Arts Fund Drive go directly to the member organizations you designate, a press release said.

“It is through your support that these organizations can continue to grow and thrive,” the release said.

Outdoor Pool has movie night on Saturday

The Oak Ridge Outdoor Pool will host a movie night on Saturday, starting at 8:30 p.m.

The 2018 movie “The Meg” (rated PG-13) will be shown poolside on an inflatable screen, a press release said. Gates will open at 8:30 p.m. with the movie scheduled to start at approximately 9 p.m. Attendees can watch the movie while floating in the water (shallow end only) or sitting in the grassy area.

Tickets are $5 each and can be purchased at the gate. Only cash or check will be accepted, no credit or debit cards, the press release said.
