The art display at Oak Ridge Public Library for February is a collection of exciting nature compositions photographed by Robert Forbes.

Forbes grew up in the flatlands of the Midwest, but after following his family to East Tennessee in April 2001, he found inspiration in the river rapids and the majestic beauty of East Tennessee’s landscape. Before moving to the Oak Ridge area, Forbes lived just outside the entrance to Cherokee National Forest and also resided on the scenic Cherohala Skyway. These locations spurred him to create and paint with a passion.

John Muir once said, “The clearest way into the universe is through a forest wilderness,” a sentiment that resonates with Forbes. He takes day trips into the mountains almost every weekend and photographs hundreds of scenes each time. [Read more…]

Children’s Museum Hosts International Fest Feb. 15

Picti, a duo performing Celtic rock, will be featured performers at the International Festival on Saturday, Feb. 15, at the Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge. The duo will have the audience on their feet as they entertain with bagpipes, bouzouki, whistles and drums, drawing on tribal elements from Celtic traditions.

Festival goers will experience entertainment, crafts, and cuisines from cultures around the world at the family friendly event, with musical and dance entertainment on stage throughout the day. Participants will dine on international cuisine, children will make international crafts to take home, and all will visit booths displaying crafts and traditions from world cultures.

The International Festival will be from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Feb. 15 at the Children’s Museum, 461 West Outer Dr., Oak Ridge. Food will be available from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

Returning this year will be the Kids Fest from 8-10 a.m., featuring international crafts, tasting food from other cultures, and dancing. The Kids Fest is for children in second through seventh grades, the cost is $15 per person, and pre-registration is required. ‘Hang out with Artists’ at Greenwich Village Mall on Saturday

Greenwich Village Mall has a “Hang out with Your Local Artists” event on Saturday.

It’s scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The mall is on the first floor of Jackson Square, next to the Soup Kitchen at 109 Towne Road.

The event will include a stained glass demonstration by Vicki Poe. The Locally Grown Gallery will have a 15 percent discount on hanging art, and photographs will be discounted.

Spencer’s Visions will offer 10 percent off prints and 20 percent off framing and matting.

Camera Club: Get your prints ready this week

It is fall, and it is time to enter your best prints in the big show sponsored by the Camera Club of Oak Ridge. Amateur and professional photographers throughout East Tennessee should bring their mounted color or black and white images to the New Hope Center at the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge on Friday, Nov. 1, from noon until 5 p.m. or on Saturday, Nov. 2, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Images must be mounted on a 16” x 20” x 3/16” foam core board. Please read complete Salon rules on the cameraclubofoakridge.org website. Entry forms and labels to affix to the back of each photograph can also be found on the website.

The gallery of images will be shown at New Hope Center during business hours throughout November and December. [Read more…]

Camera Club seeking East Tennessee entries for photography show, competition

East Tennessee’s most prestigious photography show and competition is underway for its 65th year. The Camera Club of Oak Ridge is inviting all East Tennessee photographers—both professional and amateur—to submit entries to their annual Salon.

Entries will be exhibited at the New Hope Center in Oak Ridge during November and December. A community reception and gallery walk will be held on Friday evening, Nov. 15.

Photographers may enter digital images, color prints, or black and white prints. There are three new categories this year. Categories are Architecture, Creative Vision, Creative Development, Inanimate Objects, Landscapes, People, Plants, Scenic, Urbanscapes, and Wildlife. [Read more…]

The 13th Annual Clinch River Antiques Festival kicks off on Friday evening, Oct. 11, from 6–9 p.m. in Historic Downtown Clinton with shops open late, food vendors, carriage rides, and live entertainment.

The entertainment starts Friday evening in Hoskins Lane Park on Market Street with The Real McCoys, a bluegrass band that grew up playing music together in Lake City. It’s hosted by the Anderson County Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Anderson County Class of 2014. The show is from 6:30-8:30 p.m. [Read more…]

Work by Roane State art professor selected for exhibition on Hilton Head Island

A work by Roane State Community College associate professor of art Bryan Wilkerson has been selected for exhibition during the renowned Public Art Exhibition on Hilton Head Island, S.C.

Wilkerson’s entry, “Faux Rest,” will be on exhibit through Dec. 31 at the Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn. Twenty outdoor sculptures were chosen from more than 500 submissions for the Public Art Exhibition, presented by the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry.

A nationally recognized jury will review the pieces and select one for purchase to be installed on Hilton Head Island. [Read more…]

Gem hunter brings Smithsonian style exhibit to Karen’s Jewelers

Karen’s Jewelers will host a Smithsonian style exhibit of gems and jewelry from Central Asia and Australia Wednesday through Friday, Oct. 2-4, when adventurer Gary Bowersox brings his collection of more than 60,000 gems to Oak Ridge.

Bowersox has hunted for gems this year in the mines of Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Sri Lanka and India, as well as Australia. Among his finds are a rare 29 carat black opal from Lightening Ridge, Australia, and an 1,100 carat ruby from Tajikistan. Both will be on display at the gem show at Karen’s Jewelers, 1120 Oak Ridge Turnpike. The exhibit will be on display from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. each day. [Read more…]

Do you enjoy drawing upon your artistic skills as you sketch a face, animal, or scene? Then you might like “painting” pictures in chalk on a sidewalk.

You are invited to sign up as an artist for the 14th annual Oak Ridge Street Painting Festival. This popular event will be held from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5 (rain day on Sunday), on the sidewalks of the Oak Ridge Branch Campus of Roane State Community College. Artists may start their chalk paintings on Friday afternoon, Oct. 4.

The art must be completed at 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, so it can be judged before 6 p.m., when artist awards will be announced. If you win a first prize or the People’s Choice Award, you will receive a $50 cash award as well as recognition. [Read more…]

Secret City Festival features ‘something for everyone’

Homemade Wine Band

The Homemade Wine Band played after the Friday morning opening ceremony at the Secret City Festival.

The annual Secret City Festival started today, and it features Manhattan Project bus tours and history displays, World War II living history activities and demonstrations, arts and crafts and antiques dealers, food vendors and exhibitors, a children’s festival area and youth events, and a car show and concerts.

“Join more than 20,000 visitors and residents to celebrate the end of World War II and the heritage of Oak Ridge from 1945 to the present,” a press release said.

Oak Ridge was built during World War II as part of the top-secret Manhattan Project, a federal program to build the world’s atomic bombs, and the festival celebrates the city’s heritage.

Secret City Festival announces return of ‘Kid City Circuit’

For the second year in a row, Oak Ridge has been named a Playful City and is proud to announce the return of the Kid City Circuit to the children’s area of the Secret City Festival. Playful City USA is a nationally recognized program honoring cities and towns that make play a priority and use innovative programs to get children active, playing, and healthy.
