Page duties consist of anything from making copies to running errands to distributing legislative information to members of the General Assembly. They report to the Chief Clerk of the House and Senate.

As part of a joint effort between the Anderson County District Attorney’s Office, the Sheriff’s Department, and the three school systems within the county’s borders, parents of students in fifth through 10th grades are receiving information in the mail on how to keep their children safe online.
Letters have been sent to parents of students in the county school system as well as the city systems in Clinton and Oak Ridge over the past couple of weeks and more are also being sent. Included in the mailing is information for parents on how to talk to their kids about being safe online and avoiding sexual predators. [Read more…]

Stay warm and healthy with a steamy bowl of homemade soup and a free flu shot at a community meal at the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church on Friday.
The meal is scheduled from 5 to 6 p.m. in the church’s Social Hall. It’s a great opportunity to spend time to relax and enjoy time with others from throughout the community, a press release said.
The Stone Soup team will prepare and serve a homemade meal of black eyed pea soup, sandwiches, pumpkin pie, and milk.
Nurses from the Free Medical Clinic are volunteering their time to give flu shots. Nicknamed the “flu crew,” the nurses plan to be ready to start at 4:30 p.m. and plan to finish at 5:30 p.m. The vaccine is being provided by the clinic. [Read more…]
The Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce will lay off some employees, and its support corporation, the Oak Ridge Economic Partnership, will become dormant.
A free workshop at the end of January will focus on how to start up a small business.
It’s scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, at the Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce.
The workshop is offered by the Tennessee Small Business Development Center. Registration is required.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation has recently installed signs for a new “top secret” 465-mile, self-guided driving trail that stops in Oak Ridge.
The brown signs were erected to direct visitors and curious local travelers along this important tourism route, a state press release said. They lead travelers to picturesque views in the Upper Cumberland and the “inside scoop on the state’s biggest secret.”
The Top Secret trail has 111 stops within Knox, Anderson, Campbell, Overton, Fentress, Morgan, Scott, Clay, Roane, and Pickett counties, giving visitors extensive history, culture, music, and cuisine experiences. The trail is part of the 16 Discover Tennessee Trails and Byways, an initiative by the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development, connecting Tennessee’s 95 counties to encourage guests to travel “off the beaten path” and to explore treasures of the state.
“Start the trip off at the site of the 1982 World’s Fair at World’s Fair Park, home to the world-famous Sunsphere, one of the only two remaining original fair structures,” the press release said. “Travel through the Upper Cumberland region, where guests can find out why Oak Ridge is considered Tennessee’s ‘secret city,’ the smallest library in the United States in Coalfield, and Tanners Café, Sundries & Antiques, housed in a 1906 bank that still has the original vault. Learn the history and culture of the region by stopping off at Old Union Meeting House, which is one of the oldest in the country and the Museum of Scott County, the only one of its kind created and curated by high school students. In a combined effort, Veteran’s Day committee members from three Oak Ridge fraternal lodges donated $780 in gift cards to Ben Atchley State Veteran’s Home. The Fraternal Order of the Eagles, Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, and the Loyal Order of the Moose worked to collect donations during each lodge’s Veteran’s Day events. Ben Atchley State Veteran’s home was the charity of choice for each lodge’s Veteran’s Day committee.
On Thursday, Dec. 12, members from each lodge met at the Ben Atchley Home to deliver the gift cards. The gift cards purchased included Regal Cinema and three local restaurants. The veteran residents will enjoy several outings for dinner and a movie thanks to the donation.
“Thank you all so much for your overwhelming kindness and generosity of the gift cards for our well-deserving veterans,” said Ginny Howe, Ben Atchley’s programs coordinator. “We appreciate you more than you will ever know.”

College students who are home for the holidays are hosting a coffeehouse fundraiser with live music on tonight (Friday night) from 7 to 10 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Free Medical Clinic of Oak Ridge.
The young adults hope to generate enough proceeds tonight to give a “very merry” Christmas to the clinic. The coffeehouses have become a reliable and persistent funding source for the clinic. The students have donated more than $12,000 since 2011 from the coffeehouse.
“We give them 100 percent of what we bring in, ” said Sumner Byrne, George Washington University student and event organizer. “It feels great to be making a difference.”
Byrne said many students who participate attend different colleges.
“This is a great place to get together, enjoy old friends, and make some new ones,” Byrne said. “The coffeehouse music provided by local musicians is always superb, and we raise money for a good cause. How much better can it get?” [Read more…]
A free comedy show at a Grove Center bar on Friday will feature a half-dozen comedians.
The Laughs on Tap Comedy Show starts at 9:30 p.m. Friday at Back 2 Brewski’s. It’s hosted by Danny Whitson.
The comedians include Dallas Delaney, Gail Ann Grantham-Moore, Sam Donnelly, and Leo Russell. The show features Trae Crowder, and the headliner is John Upton.
