Memorial Day Ceremony

Anderson County Veterans Service Officer Leon Jaquet says Memorial Day is for honoring military personnel who have died in the nation’s wars. (File photo/May 2012)

Anderson County Veterans Services Director Leon Jaquet has announced plans for the county’s sixth annual Memorial Day ceremony. The annual event will be held on Monday, May 26—Memorial Day—at 10 a.m. rain or shine in front of the Anderson County Courthouse in Clinton.

The ceremony will include a wreath-laying at the Veterans Memorial in front of the Courthouse in Clinton as well as remarks from Tennessee Rep. John Ragan.

In a press release, Jaquet said the ceremony is held each year “to pay tribute to the men and women of the U.S. military who have given of their lives to protect the freedoms we all enjoy everyday.

“The day itself is sacred and war veterans need no reminder of the reason for it, but what about the general public, and more importantly the next generations? Do non-veterans really recognize and understand the importance of a day honoring their fellow Americans killed in wars around the world? Sacrifice is meaningless without remembrance. Everyone is invited to attend and show their support of our military past, present and future.”

The Oliver Springs Police Department has recently partnered with the Tennessee Highway Patrol in an effort to reduce traffic fatalities on Tennessee roadways.

THP started its “Drive to Zero” campaign on April 3. The goal of the campaign is to reduce traffic fatalities by 15 percent during 2014. The campaign addresses hazardous moving violations, distracted drivers, seat belt use, and driving under the influence, a press release said.

In the announcement for that campaign, THP Sgt. Dennis Smith said each state trooper and police officer in attendance were asked one question: How many traffic fatalities is acceptable on your watch, in your neighborhood, involving someone you know?

The answer was zero by everyone present, the press release said. [Read more…]

I am Sam, a 12-year-old Border Collie Mix. I can certainly show you the calmer side of life. How about a peaceful walk in the neighborhood with me? I would love nothing more than to retire with dignity, with an owner that is as faithful to me as I would be to you.

I should not be here, but such is life. I just want a lap to lay my head on. Won’t you consider being my best and final owner?

Icky is the name I grew up with, but it is sooo wrong! I need someone to love me and look at me differently—and please change my name! How would you like to grow up with a name like that? Ricky, Nicky, or even Licky would be better for me!

I am available now. I’m a six-year-old Chihuahua mix with tons of love to give you! Just ask the people who are so kind to walk me! I don’t belong here, please?

Look at this handsome gentleman! He’s calm, proud and handsome. Hello there! I’m Butch, Milo’s partner in a non-crime! I’m about two years old, and I am a good boy, good on a leash, and I like everyone! Don’t you like my pose? I really want to meet you! I like to bark at the other dogs when they walk by, but that’s just because I’m bored, ya know. I’m pretty danged harmless and just need a buddy. Won’t you be mine?

Now why would they name me Honey Bun? Could it be ’cause I look like one and am sweet as one? The wonderful shelter folks gave me a great bath, but I need a Mommy or Daddy who will stroke my soft coat and let me give them some of my sweet love! I’m a Bearded Collie, and I just got here on May 14, so you better hurry!
