The enrollment event has been rescheduled from Saturday, January 23, to Wednesday, January 27, because of the weather last week.

CLINTON—The public is invited to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Anderson County Animal Holding Facility at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, January 29.
The facility marks a major milestone and advancement in the care and welfare of animals in Anderson County and is part of a larger, long-term plan to build an independent, county-operated state-of-the-art facility, a press release said.
On hand to celebrate will be longtime former Anderson County Commissioner Robin Biloski, who will be travelling from Florida to participate in the special event.
“Our new Animal Holding Facility clearly shows how a government effectively worked to help its residents on a neglected quality-of-life issue,” Biloski said. “Anderson County has proudly demonstrated how numerous people can come together to create a reality that our citizens have wanted and needed for so long. This issue continues to be so important to me that I left sunny Florida to be part of this inaugural event and pledge to continue to work on this initiative. Anderson County had the greatest reduction in traffic fatalities of any county in Tennessee in 2015, an official said Friday.
In 2014, there were 18 traffic fatalities in Anderson County, District Attorney General Dave Clark said. In 2015, that number dropped to seven, according to statistics maintained by the Tennessee Department of Safety.
“That difference of 11 fewer deaths in Anderson County was the greatest reduction of any Tennessee county,” Clark said.
“The traffic fatality improvements this past year represent 11 people who did not die on our roadways and 11 groups of friends and families who are not grieving this year,” Clark said. “We see the human cost of the deaths on our highways and the utter despair and shock of a family that has suddenly lost someone as the result of a traffic fatality. Therefore, I am particularly pleased with this accomplishment and what it has meant to our community. [Read more…]
“Technology for our Everyday Lives” will be the topic at an Altrusa meeting on Wednesday, January 27.
Speaker Dan Thompson, chief technical correspondent for WBIR-TV in Knoxville, will look at how technology can enhance our daily lives, but also how some “unwanteds” may have crept in, a press release said.
Thompson will discuss security for our online lives, as well as some ideas on how to communicate this to children. He’ll cover social media profiles, content filtering for our homes, and how to deal with those annoying phone calls from “Microsoft” insisting that something is wrong with your computer.
As a senior analyst for 451 Research, Thompson provides insight into the multi-tenant datacenter market space. He has spent 15 years as a practitioner in the information technology (IT) industry, the last 10 of which were spent at a top managed/cloud service provider, the press release said. [Read more…]
Omega Consultants Incorporated has been awarded a prime contract by the U.S. Army’s Joint Program Executive Office for Chemical and Biological Defense, or JPEO-CBD, under the Department of Defense.
There were 17 companies selected for this Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity, or IDIQ, contract consisting of 10 small business awards and seven large business awards. The contract ceiling is $900 million throughout the period of performance.
Omega was the only Tennessee business selected as a prime contractor for this contract award. Omega is also a subcontractor for the Camber Corporation team that received a large business award. The contract award is for three years, with an option for three additional years. JPEO-CBD is the Joint Services single focal point for research, development, acquisition, fielding, and life-cycle support of chemical and biological defense equipment and medical countermeasures. Most main roads are clear, but many secondary and back roads are extremely slick and treacherous in the northern part of Anderson County, officials said. Also, there are icy areas in the unloading zones at the county’s schools.
So, Anderson County Schools will be closed Monday, January 25, officials said.
The Central Office will follow the inclement weather procedure.
Patricia “Pat” Pierce
Patricia “Pat” Pierce will speak at the Monday, January 25, meeting of the AAUW, Oak Ridge Branch, and she will discuss “suffrage and the effort to erect a Tennessee Women Suffrage Monument at Legislative Plaza in Nashville,” a press release said.
The meeting starts at 11:30 a.m. Monday at the First Presbyterian Church, Room 102, in the activities wing of the church.
Pierce has been deeply involved in the effort to have the memorial approved, the press release said. On December 15, the Tennessee Capitol Commission unanimously approved the request.
A lunch of soup, sandwiches, and cookies at a cost of $8 will be provided by The Soup Kitchen at 11:30 a.m., with the program beginning at noon. Tea and coffee will be available also. Those attending are welcome also to bring a sack lunch. Reservations are necessary to reserve a space, however. This year’s first Breakfast with the Legislators is Monday morning. It’s scheduled from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. Monday, January 25, in the Social Room of the Oak Ridge Civic Center.
Senators Ken Yager and Randy McNally and representatives John Ragan and Kent Calfee have been invited to discuss the legislative outlook for this session of the Tennessee General Assembly and to respond to questions and hear opinions from the audience. The public is encouraged to attend. A free continental breakfast will be served.
The breakfasts are organized by the League of Women Voters of Oak Ridge. They are held at the same time and place on the fourth Monday of each month. This year, that will be February 22, March 28, and April 25, or as long as the General Assembly is in session. [Read more…]

The Loudon County woman who was reported missing on Friday and last seen at Bad Daddy’s Burger in Turkey Creek on Thursday has been found, and she is the apparent victim of a fatal single-vehicle crash, authorities said.
Melanie Coley, 29,was found ejected from her wrecked 2014 Dodge Avenger on Saturday morning in the 1400 block of Sugar Limb Road in Loudon County, the Knox County Sheriff’s Office said.
She had last been seen around 10:45 p.m. Thursday at Bad Daddy’s Burger Bar, located at 11863 Parkside Drive in Farragut. The Primrose School of Farragut had identified Coley as a preschool teacher there.
Tennessee Highway Patrol discovered the crash after coordinating with KCSO Major Crimes detectives to investigate Coley’s travel routes and patterns. The area had previously been checked by public safety personnel, but the vehicle was off the road and not visible to passing traffic, authorities said.
It appears as though Coley was on her way home when the crash occurred, the KCSO said. The Loudon County Coroner’s Office will perform an autopsy.

Oak Ridge Recreation and Parks facilities and the Oak Ridge Public Library will be closed on Saturday, January 23, due to the forecasted winter weather, officials said.
This closure includes the Oak Ridge Civic Center, the Public Library, the Scarboro Community Center, and the Senior Center.
At this time, officials plan to reopen city facilities on Sunday, January 24, at normal operating hours, a press release said.
The Anderson County Courthouse and other county government offices closed early, at 1 p.m. Friday, due to winter weather already moving into Anderson County.

Tennessee Tool and Engineering Inc. has broken ground on a 10,000-square-foot expansion in Bethel Valley Industrial Park, and the company could add up to 20 new jobs during the next three years, executives said.
The groundbreaking was for the company’s High Pressure Die Casting Division: TTE Casting Technologies Inc. The expansion was announced last week by Greg Palmer, TTE vice president/operations manager.
The expansion is part of a $5 million building and capital investment in Oak Ridge and Anderson County, the company said in a press release. Another expansion is planned for 2018 to include the machining operations at the Emory Valley Road location. The company does not plan to pursue tax abatements. [Read more…]
Oak Ridge utility customers, including commercial customers, should be aware that a scam regarding a meter change out program is happening in the area, officials said.
In this scam, a customer receives a call from someone claiming to be a representative from an electric company that provides electricity for the residents of Oak Ridge. The representative states the customer should have received a notice last week that the electric company will be changing out meters in the city, and the customer is asked to pay a deposit ($700-$900) to avoid interruption in the electric service. In some cases, the customer has been told the deposit will be refunded on the next bill. [Read more…]
