The Anderson County Commission’s Operations Committee will consider Public Works Director David Crowley’s request that his legal bill be paid after he was acquitted of criminal charges last month. Crowley had been charged with illegally inspecting five buildings without the proper certification, but he was acquitted on those charges in April.
In fighting the charges, Crowley’s legal bill came to $59,258.62. In the past, the County Commission has approved the payment of legal fees for county employees charged with crimes connected to their positions when they are cleared out of the county law director’s budget. The request was considered earlier this month and approved by the county’s budget committee. [Read more…]

On Monday, the Clinton City Council approved its budget for the fiscal year that begins July 1 on first reading.
The budget leaves the property tax rate at its current level of 94 cents per $100 of assessed value while providing 2 percent pay raises for city workers.
The second and final reading for the Fiscal Year 2016-2017 budget will be held on June 27.

Clinton city leaders are excited to announce that the long-awaited splash pad at Lakefront Park is about to be open for business.
The splash pad, paid for with donations from the community and being constructed by city crews, will celebrate its grand opening this Saturday, May 28. at 11 a.m.
The splash pad will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., except when special events are going on, like softball tournaments. That’s for safety reasons. [Read more…]

Most middle school students, when planning a trip to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama, are thinking of IMAX theater screenings, artifacts, and experiencing the physics of astronaut training in simulators such as the Space Shot and G-Force.
But what if these learners were given a real-life challenge that NASA engineers face on a daily basis, and asked to solve problems generally relegated to the top minds in the industry? What if those same young scholars were given the opportunity to then present their thought processes and design challenges to NASA engineers for a critical review?
This is the incredible experience Robertsville Middle School Ram Time participants were given in Todd Livesay’s enrichment course, a press release said. It is a part of the Response to Instruction and Intervention, or RTI2, model introduced this year in Oak Ridge middle schools, which provides rich opportunities for students who are exceeding grade level expectations in their core courses. A Claxton husband and wife were arrested Sunday after a robbery and prostitution investigation in Ben’s Mobile Home Park off Edgemoor Road, authorities said.
Around 2:30 a.m. Sunday, deputies were called to meet with a 32-year-old victim who said he had been robbed at gunpoint at a mobile home on Queen Street after replying to a Backpage.com advertisement for escort services, the Anderson County Sheriff’s Department said in a press release. The victim told deputies he had met a female at the residence, and after a short time a male entered, brandished a handgun, and robbed him of cash, the press release said.
He was then tied up and left in a bedroom, authorities said. The victim was able to free himself and flee out a window.
Deputies responded and, after an investigation, the two residents of the mobile home, Lindsay Elaine Pressley, 26, and her husband, Richard Paul Pressley, 29, were both charged with several felony offenses related to the robbery as well as prostitution. [Read more…]
An armed home-invasion robbery was reported on Jonathan Lane in Oak Ridge on Saturday afternoon, authorities said.
The robbery was reported at 122 Jonathan Lane at about 3:15 p.m. Saturday, the Oak Ridge Police Department said.
The occupants of the home were assaulted and robbed of cash and prescription drugs, the ORPD said in a press release. One of the victims was transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center by Anderson County EMS for treatment of injuries sustained during the assault. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory will open an office at EPB headquarters in Chattanooga’s Innovation District that will link local companies to the national laboratory’s resources and expertise. ORNL Director Thom Mason announced the office on Monday, May 23, at the Southeast Regional Energy Innovation Workshop at The Chattanoogan hotel.
“This is the best way for us to build on existing ORNL collaborations in Chattanooga and to identify new opportunities,” Mason said. “The work involving EPB, the Department of Energy, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory illustrates the power of regional cooperation. We want to accelerate opportunities in developing clean energy technology, manufacturing, and computing.”
ORNL continues to partner with EPB, a municipally owned utility, on researching the performance, security, and efficiency of Chattanooga’s electrical system. This research can be applied to make power systems nationwide cleaner, safer and more efficient. [Read more…]

The Oliver Springs Fire Department responded on Sunday to a mutual aid call from the Blair Volunteer Fire Department to a single-vehicle crash that left one person trapped in a pickup truck, authorities said.
Using newly purchased extrication equipment, members were able to remove the victim and turn him over to Anderson County EMS for treatment less than 15 minutes after they arrived, the Oliver Springs Fire Department said in a post published on Facebook.
“This was the first time the new equipment was used during an emergency run since being put in service,” the OSFD said. “A big thank you to the Town of Oliver Springs Board of Mayor and Council for this purchace. It has allowed the Oliver Springs Fire Department to increase its capabilities to perform rescues. This further enhances the safety of the citizens and visitors of the Town of Oliver Springs.” [Read more…]

The registration deadline is quickly approaching for the annual Tennessee Valley Corridor National Summit, which will make its first visit to Cookeville on June 1-2. The Summit, themed “Where Entrepreneurs and Technology Meet,” will be held on the campus of Tennessee Tech University , and it is hosted by TTU President Phil Oldham in cooperation with Tennessee Congressman Diane Black.
Leaders from throughout the region will be at the event to focus attention on the vital role entrepreneurs provide in turning the brain power and technologies from the region’s universities and federal programs into new business start-ups and the expansion of existing businesses.

Low-dose computerized tomography, or CT, is a screening that has been shown to save lives by finding lung cancer early, when it is easier to treat. This new procedure is available at Methodist Medical Center and will be the topic of Health Night on the Town, Tuesday, May 31, at 7 p.m. in the Ridge Conference Room of Methodist Medical Center, 990 Oak Ridge Turnpike.
Board-certified radiologist James Tramontana, MD, will discuss low-dose CT, how the screening works, its benefits, who is eligible, and the importance of this and other screenings in the early detection of cancer.

Elizabeth Genovise
A story by Roane State Community College assistant professor Elizabeth Genovise has been named a 2016 O. Henry Prize Story, among the nation’s most prestigious honors for short fiction.
Past winners include literary luminaries such as William Faulkner, John Updike, Flannery O’Connor, Alice Walker, and Truman Capote, a press release said. Genovise’s piece, “Irises,” was among 20 stories selected from thousands of works published in literary magazines.
“I honestly couldn’t believe it,” Genovise said of the moment she learned her story had been selected. “I re-read the letter 50 times thinking maybe it was an elaborate prank from a fellow writer.”
Genovise has taught English at Roane State for six years. She holds a bachelor’s degree in English from Hillsdale College, a master’s in English from McNeese State University, and a master of fine arts, or M.F.A., from McNeese State. [Read more…]
