One lane of Pennsylvania to be closed Aug. 15, 16

One lane of Pennsylvania Avenue will close on Monday and Tuesday morning next week for street repairs.

The road is scheduled to be closed between West Outer Drive and Hillside Road at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, August 15, and Tuesday, August 16. [Read more…]

Clinton Driver Services Center to close Sept. 9, move to Oak Ridge

The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security announced the current Clinton Driver Services Center will be closed Friday, September 9, and re-open Monday, September 12, in a new location.  The new location is located at 475 Oak Ridge Turnpike in Oak Ridge.

The Clinton Driver Services Center, located at 704 North Charles G. Sievers Boulevard in Clinton, will stop serving customers at the close of business on Thursday, September 8.

The new facility located at 475 Oak Ridge Turnpike in Oak Ridge will be open for business on Monday, September 12. [Read more…]

Next Veterans Breakfast in Anderson County on Saturday

The next Veterans Breakfast in Anderson County is on Saturday, August 13, at the Clinton Community Center.

Military veterans from Anderson County are invited, a press release said.

The breakfast is hosted by Anderson County citizens, and it sponsored this month by AEG: American Employer Group in Clinton, the press release said.

New Oak Ridge Schools website goes live next weekend—you can preview it now

Oak Ridge Schools will have a new website starting next weekend, and you can preview the site now.

The new website is a district-wide website, meaning the individual schools’ websites won’t change for now.

The new district website is being created by local designers from Girl on the Roof, a press release said.

“We anticipate the updated user experience will be much more inviting for families to engage with our daily communication tools, including calendars, blog posts, and social media feeds,” the press release said.

Roane State to offer extended business hours beginning Aug. 15

Roane State Community College will offer extended business hours to help students get ready for the start of the new semester.

Extended hours for the Roane County and Oak Ridge campuses are:

  • Monday, August 15-Thursday, August 18, from 8 a.m.-6 p.m.
  • Saturday, August 20, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
  • Monday, August 22-Thursday, August 25, from 8 a.m.-6 p.m.

ORHS Cross Country has fundraiser at Which Wich on Aug. 10

The Oak Ridge High School Cross Country team would like to invite the public to their fundraiser at Which Wich restaurant on Wednesday, August 10, from 5-8 p.m.

The team members will be on hand to welcome you to the Which Wich, a press release said. A portion of the restaurant’s sales during that time period will be donated to the booster club that supports the team’s activities.

“Thank you in advance for your support!” the press release said.

Oak Ridge property taxes due Aug. 31

The deadline to pay property taxes without penalty is August 31, the City of Oak Ridge said in a press release.

“With this date quickly approaching, we encourage you to stop by the business office to pay your taxes directly,” the press release said. “You can do so between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., or you can drop them in the night depository located outside the building at 200 South Tulane Avenue.”

Payment by credit card is also accepted at the counter and on the city’s website. A 3 percent convenience fee is assessed to all credit card transactions to offset the cost of the program.

The municipal staff cautioned that a relatively small number of property owners may not receive a tax notice. [Read more…]

ORHS Boys Basketball Boosters have fundraising golf tournament Aug. 13

The Oak Ridge High School Boys Basketball Boosters have a fundraising golf tournament on Saturday, August 13.

It’s their 19th annual golf tournament. This year’s event—a four-man scramble format—will be at Centennial Golf Course in Oak Ridge.

The tournament will begin at 8 a.m. August 13 with a shotgun start. The tournament costs just $75 per person, a press release said.

Registration begins at 7 a.m. with breakfast and free range balls for participants. A Mulligan Package is also available for $25, which includes mulligans, a red tee, a door prize ticket, and a putting contest ticket, the press release said. [Read more…]

On Monday, August 8, 10 restaurant locations throughout Anderson County will donate a portion of their sales to support Aid to Distressed Families of Appalachian Counties, or ADFAC. The event, Dine & Donate, happens on the second Monday of each month.

“Dine & Donate is a very important fundraiser for ADFAC,” said Cande Seay, Dine & Donate chair. “It always gladdens my heart to see friends and family dine out on second Mondays—enjoying meals together and helping ADFAC!”

Participating restaurants on Monday, August 8, are:

  • Burchfield’s in Oak Ridge
  • Hoskins in Clinton
  • Mediterranean Delight in Oak Ridge
  • Popeyes in Oak Ridge

Reminder: The City of Oak Ridge is hosting its first-ever Puppy Pool Party at the Oak Ridge Outdoor Swimming Pool today.

The Puppy Pool Party is scheduled from 5-7 p.m. today (Sunday, August 7) at the outdoor pool, which is on Providence Road across from the Oak Ridge High School.

All dogs must be non-aggressive and kept on leashes, a press release said. Pet owners must also have proof of current vaccinations. There is a fee of $3 per dog to participate, or each owner may bring a donation of canned or dry dog food to support the Oak Ridge Animal Shelter. [Read more…]

Today: Celebrate summer with music, dance at Community Band concert

The Oak Ridge Community Band has its third concert of the summer today (Sunday, August 7) at A.K. Bissell Park. The concert starts at 7 p.m.

This concert follows a very successful concert before a large crowd on July 4, a press release said.

Today’s concert will be extra special as the program “Celebrate Summer with Music and Dance” will feature a variety of music and guest vocalists Lettie Andrade De La Torre and Brandon Gibson, trumpet soloist Tim Michaels, percussionist Bill Burkhart, and dancers from the Knoxville Swing Dance Association and from the SalsaKnox Dance Company, the press release said.

The concert is free. Bring lawn chairs or blankets for outdoor seating, and enjoy refreshments from Razzleberry’s Ice Cream Lab, the press release said. [Read more…]
