Dorothy McGill, age 79, of Knoxville, passed away Monday, Sept. 23, 2013, at NHC in Knoxville.

Dorothy was the world’s greatest mother ever known and our best friend.

Lillian Eskridge Pettus

Lillian E. Pettus, 79, of Oak Ridge, departed this life on Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2013, at the Methodist Medical Center.

She was born March 28, 1934 in Lafollette, Tenn., to the late Harry Eskridge and Nellie Gillard Eskridge.

Lillian was a member of True Light Missionary Baptist Church in Knoxville, and Elder Darris Waters Sr. was her pastor.

Lillian was a devoted wife of 59 years to Willie F. Pettus Sr. and reveled in her roles as a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She had a loving spirit and an infectious smile that could light up a room. Our light is now dim, yet will shine again in the hearts of each person touched by her spirit. [Read more…]

Carl Leonard Hagaman Jr.

Carl Leonard Hagaman Jr., age 85, of Oak Ridge, passed away Friday, Sept. 20, 2013, at his home.

He was born April 24, 1928, in Harlan, Ky., the son of Carl L. Hagaman Sr. and Mabel Glynn Brown Hagaman. The Hagamans were one of the first families to come to Oak Ridge and one of the first to move into a trailer for civilian workers.

Mr. Hagaman was a 1945 graduate of Oak Ridge High School. During high school, he worked at the post office. Mr. Hagaman and his father were co-owners of Hagaman Electric Company. He served on the Insurance/Retirement Committee of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and as chairman of that committee for two terms. He was also a member of the ’43 Club.

In earlier years, he was very involved in the Boys Club. He was an avid animal lover and he enjoyed buying and selling real estate. [Read more…]

Ouida Nell Schimmel died peacefully, Sept. 18, 2013, at her home in Oak Ridge, surrounded by her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, William Edwin Schimmel, and her parents Mattie and Lawrence Keeton.

She is survived by brother, James Keeton of Oak Ridge; daughter, Anita (James A.) Barker of Knoxville; sons, Calvin Schimmel of Nashville, and Roy Schimmel of Oak Ridge; four grandchildren, Tara Barker Gilbreath of Knoxville, Christie Barker Ragle of Knoxville, Ryan and Katie Schimmel of Nashville; and four great-grandchildren, Keaton and Connor Gilbreath, Maddison Belle, and Jackson Barker Ragle; niece, Carrol Welch of Oak Ridge; and nephews Bobby Keeton of Knoxville, and Jimmy Keeton of Nashville. Mr. Collins was born March 19, 1965, in Harriman. He was a lifelong resident of this area.

Fred worked as a truck driver in the Collins family business. He graduated from the Oliver Springs High School in 1983. He enjoyed fishing, working on cars, and most importantly, spending time with his family. [Read more…]

Curley T. Barton, age 68, of Clinton, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2013, at Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge.

He was a longtime member at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church in Clinton. He loved his family and friends. Curley enjoyed working on his Cadillac, and walking. He enjoyed listening and dancing to ’60s music. He was a gun and knife enthusiast.

Mary Elizabeth Perez, age 86, a resident of Oliver Springs, died Sept. 14, 2013, at her home.

Mrs. Perez was born to Ezra Edward and Ida May Murphy in Wilson County, Tenn., on June 25, 1927. She married Lee Douglas Perez on June 25, 1950, in Ottawa, Kansas. Mrs. Perez lived in Ottawa for 38 years before moving back to Tennessee in 1987.

In Kansas and Tennessee, Mary worked in garment factories and did beautiful seamstress work for family and friends on the side. She was a master seamstress. Family and friends were very important to Mary and she cherished them dearly. [Read more…]

A.K. Silvey, age 86, a resident of Oliver Springs, passed away Sunday, Sept. 15, 2013, at his home.

A.K. was born on June 8, 1927, in Oliver Springs. He was a lifelong resident of this area.

Mr. Silvey was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Before his retirement, he was employed as a builder in the construction business. His hobbies included gardening and woodworking. He was a member of the Church of God.

A.K. is preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Mildred Marie Silvey; by brothers, Douglas Silvey, Meredith Silvey, and Newt Silvey; and by sisters, Ruby Lowe and Anna Lou Applind. [Read more…]

Judy Ann Alcorn, age 63, a resident of Oliver Springs, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2013, at Park West Medical Center in Knoxville.

Judy was born on July 3, 1950, in Abingdon, Va. She lived in Bluefield, Va., before moving to Oliver Springs in her early childhood.

She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, and she believed in the Baptist faith.
