A March 19 community lecture will feature an author who has written about Oak Ridge women and the second world war.
Denise Kiernan is author of “The Girls of the Atomic City—the Untold Story of the Women Who Helped Win World War II.”
She will be the featured speaker during the Tuesday, March 19, lecture, which starts at 6 p.m. at the American Museum of Science and Energy. It’s part of the 16th Annual Dick Smyser Community Lecture Series.
The Oak Ridge Fire Department has been hosting the Tennessee Fire Academy for a Fire Officer I and II class, a press release said.
ORFD has been hosting the class with the Tennessee Fire Service and Code Academy. It started the first week of January and will end the last week of March.

Dennis Denver Davis, 66, of Oliver Springs, passed away Thursday, March 7, at his home at 145 Patricia Lane in Oliver Springs following a long battle with cancer.
Dennis was born Aug. 10, 1946, in Oliver Springs. He was the son of Charles and Louise Davis, now both deceased.
Dennis is survived by his wife of 46 years, Patricia Ann Davis; his daughter, Shellia Ann Lane and husband Floyd Lee Lane of Oliver Springs; by a son, Steven Davis of Oliver Springs; and three grandchildren, James Floyd Lane and Peggy Anne Lane, both of Oliver Springs, and Margaret Denice Ally Davis of Kingston.

A small fire at a meter box at the Anderson County Emergency Medical Services station on Raleigh Road went out when the power to the building was cut, authorities said.
The electrical fire occurred at ACEMS Station 2 at about 4:55 p.m. Friday.
Weather had caused a service line to spark, said Josh Waldo, Oak Ridge Fire Department assistant fire chief. There was no damage to the building, which once housed the Oak Ridge Fire Department Alarm Office.

He can’t guarantee that the Oak Ridge Wildcats will win every game this fall, but returning football coach Joe Gaddis said he plans to.
Gaddis said he and his staff will revitalize fan support and increase the number of players. They will also rebuild confidence and excitement in the football program, Gaddis said during a Thursday evening reception at Oak Ridge High School Wildcat Arena.
We’re bringing it back, Gaddis told a few hundred people at the reception. Some of them wore T-shirts that said Gaddis’ Gang.

Our city has over $168 million dollars in debt—that is a 168 with six zeroes after it.
We, as the citizens of Oak Ridge, owe this debt. The number sounds huge. But the size of this debt is actually not unbearable. It is like a mortgage, we just have to pay a little bit each year—and we can afford to.
But there is a key difference between this debt and a mortgage: With a mortgage, you pay off a little bit each year, and then you are done. Unfortunately, the city of Oak Ridge is not paying down its aggregate debt each year. Instead, the city is borrowing more money each year, just making the debt larger and larger.
David L. Edwards
David L. Edwards, age 48, of Clinton, passed away suddenly on Saturday, March 2, at Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge.
He loved to cook and enjoyed the outdoors. David was very outgoing and would help anyone who was in need.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Paul Leander and Elsworth Mae Ellis, and David and Jennie B. Edwards.
Elnora Dorothy McGhee
Elnora Dorothy McGhee, age 83, a resident of Oliver Springs, went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, March 7, at the Briarcliff Health Care Center in Oak Ridge.
Mrs. McGhee was born April 5, 1929, on Clinch Mountain in Grainger County, Tenn. Following her marriage, at the age of 17, she moved to Oak Ridge. She later moved to Oliver Springs, where she has continued to live.
She was a former member of the Community Baptist Church in Oliver Springs. She had been a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Oak Ridge since the late 1980s, and most recently, she had attended New Fairview Baptist Church in Oliver Springs. Before her illness, she enjoyed attending to the children in the nurseries at both Community and Calvary Baptist.
She retired from the Y-12 Federal Plant in Oak Ridge in 1992 following 15 years of employment. She loved her family, especially her grandchildren, and she entertained herself with Word Search.
