ORHS senior wins UT-Battelle scholarship

Oak Ridge High School senior Adam LaClair has won the 2012 UT-Battelle Scholarship, a $20,000, four-year award.
The scholarship from UT-Battelle, the managing contractor of Oak Ridge National Laboratory, is given every year to a graduating senior who has a parent who works at the lab and who plans to study science, engineering or mathematics at the University of Tennessee, a press release said.
The son of Tim and Sabina LaClair, Adam LaClair is a member of the National Honor Society and Spanish Honors Society and is active in the Science Olympiad and Scholars Bowl. He has taken advanced placement courses in calculus, physics, chemistry, and English.
DOE to discuss ETTP historic preservation Thursday
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Environmental Management program is hosting a Thursday morning meeting to discuss preservation plans for the East Tennessee Technology Park, the former K-25 site.
This public meeting will begin at 8:30 a.m. in the conference room of Building 2714-G, which is located across from the Federal Building in Oak Ridge. There will be an opportunity for the public to provide comments.
Summer Camps in Oak Ridge area

Parents, it’s that time again. School’s almost out and what are we going to do with the kids? Thankfully, Oak Ridge has a lot to offer in the way of summer camps.
Camps are being offered by Continuous Threads Sewing Studio, Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge, American Museum of Science and Energy, Knoxville Zoo, Boys and Girls Club of Oak Ridge, Girls Inc., Sound Company, and the City of Oak Ridge at the Scarboro Community Center and Civic Center.
ORNL superconductivity researcher wins prize

Oak Ridge National Laboratory researcher Herbert A. Mook Jr. has won the 2012 H. Kamerlingh Onnes Prize, which is awarded for outstanding experiments in the study of superconductivity. He shares this award with O.H. Fischer of the University of Geneva, Switzerland, and T.K. Klapwijk of the California Institute of Technology.
Mook was cited “for several decades of important neutron spectroscopy and diffraction experiments on superconductors, especially those with magnetic tendencies,” an ORNL press release said.
Breakfast at the Farmer’s Market on Saturday
This Saturday will be the first Breakfast with the FARM Market in Oak Ridge from 8 a.m. until noon. Chef Xavier Presley will serve breakfast using products from local farmers.
Musicians Beau James and Jeff Stewart will play for market guests.
The farmer’s market is also open on Wednesdays from 3 to 6 p.m.
A1A, 38 Special to play Secret City Festival
A1A, the original and official Jimmy Buffett Tribute Band, and 38 Special will perform at the Secret City Festival in June.
A1A will perform Friday, June 15. Formed in 1991, A1A will play all of Jimmy Buffett’s hits along with classic reggae and beach party music.
Southern rockers 38 Special, will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 16. 38 Special will perform hits from three decades of music with favorites such as “Hold on Loosely,” “Caught Up in You,” and “Rockin’ Into the Night.”
U.S. Air Force Band to perform Saturday
Secret City Sounds presents the return of the United States Air Force Band of Mid America on Saturday.
This year, they will perform with their ensemble, Starlifter. This seven-member group will play a variety of songs from rock, pop, and jazz to contemporary and traditional patriotic songs.

Arboretum hosts moth presentation Saturday
The University of Tennessee Arboretum will host a presentation on moths on Saturday. Moth-er’s Night Out starts at 7:30 p.m. and there will be a presentation on the different types of moths that can be found in our area. When it gets dark, investigate the different moths and bugs that come out.
The arboretum is located at 901 Illinois Avenue.
National Police Week memorial on Tuesday
Local law enforcement agencies will celebrate National Police Week, May 13 through May 19, with a memorial ceremony for fallen officers in Oak Ridge on Tuesday.
The service on Tuesday, which is National Peace Officers Memorial Day, will be at the Oak Ridge Municipal Building. It’s part of next week’s National Police Week ceremonies.
Third week of citywide brush pickup
Oak Ridge is in the third week of its citywide brush pickup program. Though the schedule can change due to weather conditions or the amount of brush the city has to pick up, the following is the posted schedule for the week of May 14-18.
