A forum tonight will feature the Oak Ridge candidates for Anderson County Charter Commission.
The forum will start at 7 p.m., Thursday, October 6, in the City Room (A-111) at Roane State Community College at 701 Briarcliff Avenue in Oak Ridge.
Here are the Oak Ridge candidates:
District 6 (Oak Ridge City Hall, Robertsville, West Hills)
- Steve Mead
- Hugh B. Ward Jr.
District 7 (Highland View, Pine Valley, Glenwood)
- Marjorie Mott Lloyd
- Theresa Scott
- David G. Stanley
District 8 (Emory Valley, Woodland, Hendix Creek)
- Kathy Moore
- Bob Smallridge
The forum will begin with a short presentation on charter commissions by Joe Jarret, University of Tennessee lecturer and former chief legal counsel to the Knox County Charter Review Commission.
Voters will elect one charter commissioner per district to the eight-member Charter Commission.
The forum has been organized by the League of Women Voters of Oak Ridge. LWVOR member Kathy Edwards will moderate the forum. Questions will be provided by the audience.
Early voting begins October 19 and ends November 3. The election is Tuesday, November 8.
Among the issues raised during the petition drive to call for the Charter Commission were term limits. But the Charter Commission may or may not consider that issue—or any others. When elected, the charter commissioners will make a decision on what to take on, said Mark Stephens, Anderson County Election Commission administrator. It could be very broad, or not.
Those who sought to have a Charter Commission submitted the required 1,776 signatures—equal to 10 percent of those voting in the last governor’s race in 2014—in a petition on July 1.
It would be the first charter for Anderson County. Only two counties in the state have a charter now: Knox County and Shelby County.
More information will be added as it becomes available.
