The city manager will present his proposed budget for the fiscal year that starts July 1 during a work session at 7 p.m. today in the Oak Ridge Municipal Building Courtroom.
The budget presentation had earlier been scheduled for May 6, but it has been changed due to scheduling conflicts, a city press release said.
The work session has been relocated so it can be recorded for later viewing on the city’s website, as well as to air live on BBB Communications, Channel 12.
The budget materials will be filed in the Oak Ridge City Clerk’s Office and the Oak Ridge Public Library after being presented to the Oak Ridge City Council tonight. The press release said the meeting is an opportunity for the city manager and city staff to provide a briefing and general overview of the budget.
The remaining meeting dates for May remain unchanged with the public hearing and first reading of the appropriation ordinance occurring on Monday, May 13, and the second reading (final adoption) of the appropriation ordinance scheduled for Tuesday, May 28.
The Oak Ridge Schools budget is scheduled for final adoption at the special Oak Ridge Board of Education meeting on May 23, the press release said. The school board chairman is scheduled to present Oak Ridge School budget highlights at the May 28 City Council meeting, when the final adoption of the fiscal 2014 city budget ordinance is scheduled to occur.
Also on tonight’s agenda:
- proposed refinancing of city bond schedules,
- options concerning the rate adjustment to the city’s garbage collection contract after the termination of the RecycleBank program,
- review of city protocols and procedures for military and special community honorees and employees, and

Sam Hopwood says
I sincerely hope that Council will include a very substancial increase for Mr. Watson in the coming year’s budget. He has done an excellent job and should be generously rewarded. No question in my mind that the job of City Manager is the most important and difficult position in our fair city.
Just my view…
