The Oak Ridge City Council is scheduled to fill 43 positions on 17 boards and commissions during a special meeting tonight.
The boards include two of the most high-profile bodies, the Industrial Development Board and Oak Ridge Municipal Planning Commission.
Others include the Beer Permit Board, Board of Building and Housing Code Appeals, Oak Ridge Convention and Visitors Bureau, and Recreation and Parks Advisory Board.
Oak Ridge City Clerk Diana Stanley said about 48 applicants have expressed an interest in serving on one of the boards.
Other boards and commissions that could have spots filled tonight include:
- Anderson County Board of Equalization
- Anderson County Community Action Commission
- Anderson County Economic Development Association
- Highland View Redevelopment Board
- Board of Zoning Appeals
- Elder Citizens Advisory Board
- Environmental Quality Advisory Board
- Oak Ridge Housing Authority
- Personnel Advisory Board
- Trade Licensing Board
- Traffic Safety Advisory Board
The new system of appointing board and commission members was proposed by Oak Ridge City Manager Mark Watson two years ago. Watson suggested then, and City Council later agreed, that volunteer members of city boards be appointed all at once, rather than in the current staggered elections throughout the year—saving time for the city staff and Council members.
Tonight’s special City Council meeting starts at 7 p.m. in the Oak Ridge Municipal Building Courtroom.
