Two championship regattas have been at the Oak Ridge Marina this month.

The first was the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association (SIRA) Championship Regatta on April 15-16.

The second is the Dogwood Junior Championship Regatta this weekend, April 22-23.

The regattas are hosted by the Oak Ridge Rowing Association.

A press release said the SIRA Championship Regatta is one of the premier rowing competitions in the southeastern United States. This year, 48 college and university club rowing teams from across the nation were expected to participate in the event, including the University of Tennessee. ORRA expected around 2,000 athletes to compete.

At last check, 28 teams were registered for the Dogwood Junior Championship Regatta, with more registrations reported. As a result, Oak Ridge is hosting 1,000 athletes from across the country, showcasing some of the most talented youth rowers in the sport, the press release said. The regatta began with time trials on Saturday morning, followed by traditional semifinals and finals on Sunday afternoon.

Spectators are welcome to attend the regattas on Oak Ridge’s waterfront.

“The events are expected to attract visitors from all over the globe and will provide a great opportunity to showcase the beautiful Oak Ridge community and its state-of-the-art sporting facilities,” the press release said.

Sebastian DePascuale, the Oak Ridge Rowing Association’s president, expressed his excitement about the regattas:”We’re thrilled to welcome rowers from across the nation to the 2023 SIRA and Dogwood Junior Championship regattas. Oak Ridge has a rich history of hosting high-level rowing competitions, and we’re proud to continue that tradition with these two events. With the University of Tennessee right in our backyard, we’re excited to showcase our local talent alongside competitors from major universities and youth teams across the country. It’s sure to be a thrilling competition and a great opportunity for spectators to witness the sport at its finest.”
