Oak Ridge National Laboratory employees receivedÂ Department of Energy Secretaryâ€™s Honor AwardsÂ from Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm in January for their work on projects related to computer tools and classified information, a new alloy, and the production of plutonium-238 and special components for the Mars Perseverance rover.
The annual awards recognized 21 teams and three individuals for service and contributions to DOEâ€™s mission and to the benefit of the nation, a press release said. More than 50 current employees and recent retirees from ORNL received awards.
â€œThe Department of Energyâ€™s core missionâ€”promoting scientific discovery, maintaining the nuclear deterrent, and remediating environmental harmsâ€”have never been more important,â€ Granholm said. â€œOur role in tackling the climate emergency and ensuring Americaâ€™s continued security and prosperity is absolutely critical, and it could not be done without the dedicated and diverse team of world-class scientists, engineers, policy experts, and mission support personnel employed at our headquarters, fields sites, and laboratories across the country.â€
The teams and ORNL employees named in achievement awards include:
Advanced Computer Tools to Identify Classified Information Program Team. This team creates tools to improve the classification decision-making process. The award citation states, â€œThe ACTICI team, composed of a diverse collection of subject matter experts from across the DOE complex, is solving this most difficult problem through collaboration and teamwork allowing great ideas to be shared among the labs and across the government.â€ ORNL employees named in the award include Dustin Reinert, Chelsey Dunivan Stahl, Christopher Stahl, and Steven Young.
Alloy 617 American Society of Mechanical Engineers Code Qualification Team. The team facilitated the addition of a new alloy to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, the first alloy to be added in 20 years. The nickel, chromium, cobalt, and molybdenum alloy enables â€œthe use of high-temperature reactors to meet the United Statesâ€™ energy security and climate change goals and paves the way for additional advanced alloys to be qualified in the future,â€ according to the citation. ORNL employee Yanli Wang was named in the award.
Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover Radioisotope Power Systems Team. The award recognizes ORNL for both plutonium-238 production efforts and special component manufacturing, also lauding Idaho National Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and other supporting national labs and industry partners. Pu-238, in pellet form, produces heat converted to electricity by the roverâ€™s multi-mission radioisotope thermoelectric generator, which moves the rover and powers the instruments used on Marsâ€™ surface. ORNL employees named in the award include Porter Bailey (retired), Glynn Baird, Chris Bryan, Ashli Clark, Greg Cox, Jeff Delashmitt, Dave DePaoli, Alan Frederick, Brian Friske, Nidia Gallego, Easo George, Joshua Greene, Kevin Hanson, Bryson Hutchison, Chris Jensen, Doug Kyle, Tom Lecomte, Michael McAlister, Mike Medley, Jim Miller, Roger Miller, Bob Morris, Govindarajan Muralidharan, Tom Muth, Allison Neal, Jessica Osborn, Dean Pierce, Jeff Pryor (retired), Kevin Redden, Ben Roach, Glenn Romanoski, Nick Sullivan, George Ulrich, Rex Veach, Ray Vedder,Â Eric Vidal, and Bob Wham.Â Read more about the award and see the full list of project contributors.
