Oak Ridge City Council members Jim Dodson, Derrick Hammond, and Chuck Hope were re-elected Tuesday.
They had one challenger, Edward Jackson Jr.
Oak Ridge Board of Education members Angi Agle and Keys Fillauer were also re-elected.
In the City Council election, Dodson received the most votes, 8,253, in Anderson County. He received the second-most votes in Roane County, 1,499. He had a total of 9,752 votes in the two counties, giving him the most total votes of any candidate and 852 more than the second-place finisher.
“I am humbled and honored to be given another opportunity to serve the citizens of Oak Ridge,” Dodson said in a statement Wednesday morning. “I congratulate my friends and fellow council members Chuck Hope and Derrick Hammond on being re-elected as well and would like to thank Edward Jackson Jr. on being willing to serve his community. I truly feel we have a talented team who place the interest of our Oak Ridge residents first and foremost. In the next four years, we will continue to improve the quality of life in our town through expanded housing opportunities, safe schools, progressive economic development, while continuing our support of what makes Oak Ridge unique and special.”
Most Oak Ridge residents live in Anderson County, but the west end of the city is in Roane County.
Hammond was second with 7,468 votes in Anderson County. He was third in Roane County, with 1,432 votes there, and second overall in both counties with 8,900 votes combined in the two counties.
Hope was third in Anderson County with 7,340 votes, but he received 1,557 votes in Roane County, the most of any Council candidate there. Hope had a total of 8,897 votes in the two counties, giving him the overall third-place finish.
Jackson received 3,895 votes in Anderson County and 881 votes in Roane County. That was a total of 4,776 votes in the two counties. He finished fourth; only three Council seats were available. Council seats are at-large, meaning there are no districts, and those who collect the most votes are elected.
Dodson, an art teacher at Jefferson Middle School, was first elected in 2016 and has served one four-year term on City Council.
Hammond, pastor of Oak Valley Baptist Church, was appointed to fill a vacancy on the Oak Ridge City Council in 2018 and elected after a special election later that year. This will be his first four-year term.
Hope, owner of Chuck’s Car Care Center, has served two four-year terms on Council. He was selected by Council in 2011 to fill a vacated City Council seat, and he successfully ran for election twice in 2012. He was re-elected in 2016.
The seven members of the Oak Ridge City Council serve staggered terms, with three seats open for election this year and four seats open for election in 2022.
In the school board race, Agle and Fillauer ran unopposed. Fillauer has served on the school board for 19 years, and he has served as chair for the last 11 years. Agle has served four terms.
School board members also serve staggered terms, with two seats open for election this year and the three others open for election in 2022.
In another local election, Oak Ridge City Judge Bob McNees was re-elected. He faced no opposition.
In a state election, Representative John Ragan was re-elected to his seat in District 33 in Anderson County. Ragan also had no opposition.
