Day one of the District 3-AAA basketball tournament at Anderson County is in the books, and both the Mavericks and Lady Mavs survived and advanced on Tuesday.

The Lady Mavs got things started by rolling over Clinton 55-26 behind an 11-0 second-quarter scoring run and a 20-point, 14-rebound performance from Brooklin McCoy. Senior Klarissa Roberts also reached double figures for AC, scoring 13 points. Clinton shot only 17 percent from the field as their season ended despite nine points and eight rebounds from Kelley Wandell in her final game in Orange and Black.

Next up for the Lady Mavs will be a 6 p.m. Thursday game with Halls, which easily dispatched Central 47-17.

In boys’ action at Anderson County on Tuesday, the Mavericks had five players score in double figures, led by Spencer Chandler’s 15 points, as they eliminated Gibbs 70-55. Grant Holt added 14 for AC, which also got 12 points each from Reid Phillips and Riley Sexton and 10 from Zach Green. The Mavericks will face Powell Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. after the Panthers outlasted Halls 55-49 in overtime.

The District 3-AAA tournament continues this evening (Wednesday, February 17) with the Gibbs girls tangling with Karns at 6 p.m., and the Clinton boys battling Campbell County in a game you can hear on WYSH’s Fox & Farley Full Court Press at 7:30 p.m. The winner of the Dragon/Cougar game will advance to play third-seeded Karns Friday night at 7:30 p.m.

All games in the District 3-AAA tournament are being played at Anderson County High School.

Elsewhere, in the District 4-A girls’ tournament Tuesday, Coalfield ended Jellico’s season 84-58 and will play Wartburg, 61-29 winners over Sunbright Friday, while Oakdale eliminated Oliver Springs 57-53 and will play Oneida Friday night in a semifinal game.
