Crime dropped 12 percent in Anderson County and its cities in 2014, Anderson County District Attorney General Dave Clark said Wednesday.

It’s the eighth year in a row that crime has dropped, according to statistics released by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, Clark said in a press release. He said crime is down 42 percent in the county and its cities during the past eight years.

During that same period, crime was down in Tennessee by an “impressive” 16 percent, Clark said.

“However, locally, we have more than doubled the crime reduction that has been accomplished across the state,” he said.

The TBI tracks crime in cities and counties in Tennessee with the help of local law enforcement agencies. TBI releases annual statistics each spring.

“I am very proud of our accomplishments so far,” Clark said. “One of my key goals has been to encourage good communication and working relationships among the agencies and officials involved in our local criminal justice system. I am pleased to report that within our local system from neighborhood watch groups and law enforcement officers to judges, everyone is working hard to do the best job they can. Over time, this can make a huge difference in a community.”

Authorities are pleased with the progress but not satisfied, Clark said.

“I know there is more that we can do,” he said. “We are going to work hard and try to work smart and together to continue to make Anderson County and its cities better and safer places to live, work, and invest.”

Clark said the eight-year reduction in crime means that there are more than 3,000 fewer crimes in Anderson County every year now than there were in 2007.

“That represents many people who are not being victimized by crime each year,” the DA said.

Oak Ridge also released its 2014 crime statistics, and they showed that total reported crimes were down 18 percent in 2014.
