Law enforcement personnel from the Oak Ridge Police Department and Anderson County Sheriff's Department stand at attention Tuesday during a National Peace Officers Memorial Day ceremony at the Municipal Building.
A Tuesday memorial service honored law enforcement officers who died while working and paid tribute to those who have died since retiring.
“Their sacrifices will never be forgotten,” Oak Ridge Police Chief James T. Akagi said after the afternoon ceremony at the Municipal Building. “It’s a sacred bond between law enforcement officers.”
Tuesday was National Peace Officers Memorial Day, and this week is National Police Week.
Akagi said the Oak Ridge Police Department has never lost an officer in the line of duty, but the work is generally getting to be much more dangerous, with felonious assaults and ambushes on the rise.

The Anderson County Sheriff’s Department also attended Tuesday’s ceremony and so did other emergency personnel, including the Oak Ridge Fire Department.
The Sheriff’s Department has lost seven officers in the line of duty. Six were killed by gunfire and one died in an automobile accident, according to a press release from the department.
