Y-12 National Security Complex workers have found new uses for old utility poles, saving them from the landfill.

The poles are being used to create vehicle and horse trailer barriers in the Lone Mountain State Forest parking lots, and the U.S. Department of Energy is using some of them at its secure transportation courier training facility in Oak Ridge.

Y-12 work day at the Wildcat Den

Y-12 National Security Complex employees will be at the Wildcat Den at 8:30 a.m. Saturday for a work day.

The volunteers plan on working on the driveway and trim the back yard.

Mother bear and cub last seen west of Y-12

After almost two days of bear sightings in Oak Ridge, Y-12 National Security Complex workers reported Wednesday night that a mother black bear and cub were last seen before 7 p.m. on the west end of Bear Creek Road.

Earlier in the day, an employee reported that a bear was spotted on the north side of Y-12.

More than 1,000 turn out for Y-12 Volunteer Day

More than 1,000 people turned out for the Y-12 National Security Complex’s annual Day of Volunteering last weekend to help nonprofit agencies in the region with about 60 projects. This was the program’s largest turnout in 10 years,  according to a press release from B&W Y-12.

The work benefits local individuals and organizations.

“Our folks volunteer year-round, but this annual event is a great reminder of how individuals working together can make a big difference in our communities,” said Darrel Kohlhorst, president and general manager of B&W Y-12, which buys the supplies for volunteers to use on the projects.
