Fire starts with cooking oil, ends with baking flour

A fire that started in a pan of hot oil in a West Outer Drive home Thursday and spread to an artificial plant on top of kitchen cabinets ended when a neighbor dumped baking flour on the plant, extinguishing the flames, a fire report said.

A West Outer Drive man told firefighters he had been heating oil to cook frozen chicken nuggets earlier in the day and left the oil unattended, an Oak Ridge Fire Department report said. When the man returned to the stove, the oil was on fire.

The man picked up the pot and headed for the front door but decided the fire in the pan was too large, the report said. So, he placed the pan in the sink and turned on the water.

The Oak Ridge Fire Department put out a car fire on West Outer Drive on Wednesday morning.

The 7:04 a.m. fire was in the engine compartment of a 2001 Chevy Impala and could have been caused by a mechanical problem, said Josh Waldo, Oak Ridge assistant fire chief.

No one was injured in the fire, which was on West Outer Drive near Westlook Circle.

The estimated damage to the vehicle was unknown.

West Outer Drive Home Demolition

Demolition work started Monday at a West Outer Drive home that Oak Ridge officials say has had code violation problems for a decade.

“The owners refused to comply with repeated requests to bring the property up to code,” a city press release said Tuesday.

It said the Board of Building and Housing Code Appeals declared the home at 759 W. Outer Drive unfit for human occupation and ordered it demolished in June 2011.
