Civic Center locker rooms closed through Christmas, starting Monday

The Oak Ridge Civic Center locker rooms will be closed for maintenance starting Dec. 17 and ending Christmas, Dec. 25.

The indoor pool will be open regular hours Dec. 17 and 18 but with no access to the locker rooms. On Dec. 19, the pool will close at 1 p.m. and remain closed until Dec. 26, a press release said.

Oak Ridge, Woman’s Club light Christmas tree

Oak Ridge Christmas Tree Lighting

The Oak Ridge Woman’s Club and the Oak Ridge Recreation and Parks Department had the annual Christmas tree lighting at A.K. Bissell Park on Friday night.

Several hundred people attended the annual Christmas tree lighting and concert at A.K. Bissell Park and Civic Center on Friday night.

It was sponsored by the Oak Ridge Woman’s Club and the Oak Ridge Recreation and Parks Department.

Entertainment after the tree lighting included music by the Jefferson Middle School Orchestra, a Linden Elementary School chorus, and the Oak Ridge Community Band.

PlanET has greenway meeting in Oak Ridge tonight

A five-county regional planning organization will have a public meeting on greenways at the Oak Ridge Civic Center tonight.

It’s one of four regional meetings and part of an effort to expand and connect greenway systems in Anderson, Blount, Loudon, and Union counties, a press release said.

Lifeguarding class starts Dec. 13

The Oak Ridge Recreation and Parks Department is offering an American Red Cross Lifeguarding class that starts Dec. 13.

The class will meet:

  • Thursday, Dec. 13 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Monday–Wednesday, Dec. 17-19, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Thursday and Friday, Dec. 27 and 28, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Christmas tree lighting at Civic Center on Dec. 7

The Oak Ridge Woman’s Club and the Oak Ridge Recreation and Parks Department will sponsor the annual Christmas tree lighting and reception on Friday, Dec. 7.

The ceremony begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Secret City Commemorative Walk on the east side of the Oak Ridge Library parking lot.

A reception will follow in the Oak Ridge Civic Center gymnasium. Participants will enjoy refreshments and seasonal music, a press release said. The entertainment will include the Jefferson Middle School Orchestra, a Linden Elementary School chorus, and the Oak ridge Community Band.

Children’s Halloween Party tonight at A.K. Bissell Park

The Oak Ridge Children’s Halloween Party is this evening at A.K. Bissell Park.

The party starts at 6 p.m. and ends at 8:30 p.m. It includes carnival games, a giant inflatable caterpillar crawl, a game room for toddlers, Halloween cartoon videos, a glow room, and a craft room, a press release said, and the ever-popular Scary Room will return with a pirate theme.

A hayride is planned, weather permitting, the press release said.

Tickets will be sold at the door for 25 cents each, and most of the activities cost one or two tickets. The craft room, cartoon videos, and toddler area are free.

Concessions and souvenirs will also be available for sale in the Glow Room.

Volunteers are still needed. Call the Oak Ridge Recreation and Parks Department at the Civic Center at (865) 425-3450 if you would like to volunteer to help.

A.K. Bissell Park is at 1403 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

Secret City Festival begins today

The Secret City Festival begins today at 11:30 a.m. and goes through 7 p.m. Saturday at the Oak Ridge Civic Center.

It features children’s activities, a youth area, music, food, history exhibits, bus tours, arts and crafts, and a World War II re-enactment.
