“I’m one good looking dude named Samson, and the ladies just love my piercing golden eyes. Are you mesmerized yet? They usually work like a charm! I am one cool kitty, but this is not my pad of choice…frankly. And they tell me black cats are not so easily adopted. Well, let me change your mind. I am a sweetheart of a guy. Any takers?”

Please stop by the shelter and visit our beautiful animals today. We are full of cats at this point, so please share to help us place them in good homes. [Read more…]

Butterfinger is the featured Pet of the Day at the Oak Ridge Animal Shelter.

“I am the most handsome golden long-haired tabby. Miss Sandi and Miss Bev, of course, are fighting over time spent with me. I was a stray, but I am healthy and so very handsome. I was pretty noisy when Miss Sara brought me in, but it didn’t take any time to warm up to Miss Beverly’s loving arms. She thought I looked like a big yummy Butterfinger. I don’t really like being stuck in this cage. This is really no place for such an HQ guy like me! I need out…see you Tuesday!” [Read more…]

Animal Shelter closure extended as workers battle deadly canine virus

The Oak Ridge Animal Shelter will remain closed two more days as workers battle an outbreak of deadly canine distemper.

On Wednesday, the Oak Ridge Police Department announced that two cases of canine distemper had been confirmed by an Oak Ridge veterinarian’s office and said a dog adopted in January may have contracted the often-fatal virus—although it wasn’t clear when or where.

The shelter was temporarily closed this past Thursday, and it was expected to re-open on Tuesday. But on Monday, Oak Ridge Police Department Lt. Robin Smith said it will now re-open this coming Thursday, giving the shelter staff more time to clean and disinfect. He said the staff is taking precautions to make sure they have totally eradicated the disease.

Smith said 30 dogs at the shelter had to be euthanized because of the virus. The staff had to assume that all the dogs at the shelter had been exposed, Smith said. He said some shelter dogs that showed symptoms were tested, and some results came back positive. [Read more…]

Animal Shelter closed until Tuesday to prevent spread of canine distemper

Oak Ridge Animal Shelter

The Oak Ridge Animal Shelter on Belgrade Road is pictured above.

The Oak Ridge Animal Shelter will be closed until Tuesday, March 11, as a precaution to prevent the spread of canine distemper, authorities said.

Several dogs in the shelter are being tested after exhibiting symptoms of the disease, the Oak Ridge Police Department said in a press release. No cats have shown signs of distemper and are not susceptible to canine distemper.  The virus can be passed from dog to dog through sneezing, coughing, and sharing food and water bowls.  Wild animals can also spread the disease.  Pet owners are encouraged to ensure their animals have been vaccinated.

Although all animals recently admitted to the shelter have been vaccinated, this will not benefit those infected prior to arrival, the release said. Pet owners recently adopting dogs from the shelter should contact the shelter if signs of canine distemper appear.  Symptoms may include sneezing, coughing, discharge from the eyes and nose, depression, and loss of appetite.
