A 28-year-old Oak Ridge man wanted after a September shooting and three-car crash was arrested in Knox County on Sunday, authorities said.

Authorities are waiting for Larry Dewayne Williams, 28, to be transported to Anderson County.

“We’re very, very pleased with that,” Oak Ridge Police Chief Jim Akagi said of the arrest, “and we eagerly await his transfer to Anderson County to answer the charges.”

The specific charges haven’t been released yet.

In September, the Oak Ridge Police Department said it seized 49.2 grams of suspected heroin in a West Outer Drive house that is the home of Williams and Chelsea Reign Lively, 22.

The ORPD said it found the drugs, which also included about 7.72 ounces of suspected marijuana, during a search after the September 21 shooting, which was on Wakefield Road, and three-car crash about two hours later at North Illinois Avenue and West Outer Drive.

Oak Ridge firefighters and an Anderson County ambulance crew responded to a report of a baby delivery at a car rental store on Oak Ridge Turnpike on Sunday night.

The call from Enterprise Rent a Car at 608 Oak Ridge Turnpike came in at 7:58 p.m. Sunday.

The baby was delivered in the short time before the Oak Ridge Fire Department arrived. Emergency workers cut the baby’s cord, and the newborn and mother were taken to the hospital on an Anderson County Emergency Medical Services ambulance, along with two firefighters.

The baby began to cry after firefighters treated it at the scene, and that’s a good sign, Oak Ridge Fire Chief Darryl Kerley said. [Read more…]

Senior running back T.J. Allison scored two more touchdowns for Oak Ridge, and the Wildcats had their second shutout of the season in a 24-0 win over McMinn County at home on Thursday.

Oak Ridge junior receiver Tee Higgins, who did not score a touchdown last week for the first time this season, added another to his total on Thursday. With Texas A&M defensive coordinator John Chavis watching from the sidelines, Higgins also had a long punt return that set up a touchdown and an interception on a long throw by McMinn County sophomore quarterback Bradley Hayes.

Senior running back D.J. Kimpson generated almost all of the offense for the Cherokees. He ran for 159 yards on 38 carries. That was more than three-quarters of the Cherokees’ total offense of 203 yards. Kimpson gained 109 yards in the first half alone. Hayes only threw the ball six times, and he had two completions and two interceptions.

Higgins (6 catches, 98 yards) and Allison (20 carries, 96 yards) are now tied as the leading scorers for the Wildcats, with 11 touchdowns each.

Allison picked up four of his touchdowns in a 56-14 win at Karns last week, when Oak Ridge (7-1, 3-1 Region 3-5A) rushed for 514 yards. He added one on the ground and one through the air this week. [Read more…]

Oak Ridge Today

Information from WYSH Radio

Friday night, it looked for two quarters like the Clinton Dragons might snap arguably their most vexing dry spell—the six-year long losing streak to archrivals Anderson County—but in the second half, the Mavericks ran all over that notion, rallying from a 27-6 halftime deficit for a thrilling 51-47 win at Clinton.

The win ran AC’s streak in the Crosstown Showdown to seven in a row and 16 of the last 17 meetings.

Anderson County outscored Clinton 45-20 in the second half on the strength of their running game, led by Mason Phillips’ 293 yards and 5 touchdowns on 44 carries.

Quarterback Tate Holmes added 147 yards rushing and a score. His only completion of the game was a 29-yard scoring strike to Thasaud Thrasher. [Read more…]

Man convicted of possessing heroin for sale in school zone

Charles Randolph Johnson

Charles Randolph Johnson

A man who came to Anderson County from the Detroit area has been convicted of possessing heroin and marijuana for sale in a school zone, and he faces 25 to 40 years in prison, authorities said Wednesday.

Charles Randolph Johnson was found guilty on Friday, September 18, Anderson County District Attorney General Dave Clark said in a press release. The jury deliberated for 1.5 hours before announcing their verdict after a trial that lasted 1.5 days.

Johnson has a separate November 10 trial for actually selling the heroin, Clark said in the press release. The DA said Johnson has been charged separately for allegedly selling heroin three times on Coconut Lane near Claxton Elementary School. He also has charges pending for allegedly coercing a witness, Clark said.

The DA said the potential 25- to 40-year sentence for the Friday convictions is based on Johnson’s prior felony record and because the jury found that the crime occurred within a school zone. But the specifics of the sentence will be determined by Anderson County Criminal Court Judge Don Elledge at the November 30 sentencing hearing, Clark said. [Read more…]
