Oak Ridge Lady Wildcats add coach, have car wash Saturday

The Oak Ridge Lady Wildcats program has added Coach Tammy Dowdell-Threat to its staff, a press release said.

Dowdell-Threat was born and raised in the Oak Ridge community and is a product of the Oak Ridge school system, the release said. She is a 1989 graduate of Oak Ridge High School, where she was a three-year starter and member of the first Lady Wildcats state basketball championship team in 1988. In 1988, she was also a member of the Lady Wildcats state track championship team. Dowdell-Threat accumulated numerous awards during her career at Oak Ridge and is still listed in the record books, the release said.

She  continued her basketball career at the University of Kentucky and University of Tennessee in Chattanooga, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business management. While at Chattanooga (1991-94), she earned first and second team All-Conference, as well as finishing in the Top 10 in several categories and was also a member of the 1,000 point club, the release said. Temptations Revue featuring Nate Evans at ORHS for Aug. 9 fundraiser

Temptations Nate Evans Theater

The Temptations Revue featuring Nate Evans will perform at Oak Ridge High School on August 9 in a fundraiser for the proposed revitalization of Jack Armstrong Stadium and Blankenship Field.

The show starts at 7:30 p.m. August 9. The Temptations Revue will perform Motown hits like “My Girl,” “The Way You Do the Things You Do,” “Get Ready,” “Just My Imagination,” “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” “I Wish It Would Rain,” and “Papa Was a Rolling Stone.”

The concert is presented by the Oak Ridge Quarterback Club, with all proceeds going to the revitalization effort.

First Blue Raider in track and field and cross country

AUSTIN, Texas—Autumn Gipson, a senior runner at Middle Tennessee State University and former all-star athlete at Oak Ridge High School, was selected to the 2014 Capital One Academic All-America Women’s Track and Field/Cross Country third team. The College Sport Information Directors of America announced the selection in late June.

Gipson, a key contributor for MTSU in cross country and track and field, is an exercise science major that has maintained a 4.0 grade point average, the university said in a story posted on its website. She was also selected to the Conference USA Women’s Track and Field All-Academic team on May 28 and the C-USA Women’s Cross Country All-Academic team in November 2013.

“Gipson is the perfect combination of putting academics and athletics together,” said Middle Tennessee head coach Dean Hayes. “She is a good student and has done good things athletically, while making the most of her opportunity at Middle Tennessee. What she has done in the classroom and on the track will help her find success in the future.”

The Knoxville native notched two top-10 finishes in cross country, placing as high as eighth on the two-mile course at the Front Runner Invitational, the MTSU story said. During the indoor season, she tallied three individual top-15 finishes and was a member of the distance medley relay, which placed in the top seven in the five meets they competed in. The relay team captured first at the Edward S. Temple Classic and seventh at the C-USA Indoor Championships. [Read more…]

CHS soccer appeals TSSAA penalties after May fight

Clinton High School athletic director Dan Jenkins was in Murfreesboro on Wednesday to appeal the penalties handed down against the Dragons soccer team after a brawl during the closing minutes of a district tournament quarterfinal game at Central last month.

The appeal was made to the TSSAA Board of Control, and a decision is expected to be handed down by the end of the week.

The school was fined $3,250, and the soccer team was placed on two years of regular probation and two years of restrictive probation, which will keep them out of the postseason for the next two seasons. [Read more…]

The Boston Red Sox picked Kevin Steen, a right-handed pitcher from Oak Ridge High School, in the ninth round of the Major League Baseball draft on Friday.

Steen, who has committed to play baseball at the University of Tennessee, was the 284th pick in the three-day, 40-round First-Year Player Draft, which had more than 1,200 selections.

He was one of of four right-handers picked by the Red Sox on Day 2 of the draft, with only one selection coming straight from high school, the team said in a press release.

Steen also played basketball for the Oak Ridge Wildcats and helped lead the team to a state championship game in March for the first time since 1963. Oak Ridge finished as state Class AAA runner-up. [Read more…]

ORHS Football Boosters have pancake breakfast fundraiser Saturday

The Oak Ridge High School Football Boosters will have a pancake breakfast fundraiser for the 2014 football season on Saturday, June 7, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Lincoln’s Sports Grille.

The cost is $5 per person, and children three years of age and under eat free with a purchase of an adult ticket. This includes pancakes, sausage, bacon, juice, milk, and coffee.

“Please come out and support the 2014 Wildcats!” a press release said.

An August concert by the Temptations Revue will kick off the fundraising campaign to revitalize Blankenship Field and Jack Armstrong Stadium into a world-class facility, organizers said.

The Aug. 9 concert will be in the Oak Ridge High School Auditorium. It’s sponsored by the Oak Ridge Quarterback Club.

The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 9, and tickets must be purchased online. They went on sale to the public on Thursday.

All proceeds will be directed to the revitalization effort to revamp Blankenship Field/Jack Armstrong Stadium. [Read more…]

The Anderson County Mavericks football team will be having a spring inter-squad Blue vs. Gray Game. The game will be played at 7 p.m. Friday at Lake City Football Field.

Tickets are available for $5 at the school office or at the gate.

The Oak Ridge City Council agreed last week to use $180,000 in traffic camera money for improvements to the lower parking at Blankenship Field.

 

The Oak Ridge City Council agreed last week in a 5-2 vote to use $180,000 in traffic camera money for improvements to the lower parking lot at Blankenship Field, which is used for football games and high school graduation.

The request from Oak Ridge Mayor Tom Beehan was reviewed at a City Council work session on April 28.

The work could include resurfacing work at the lower parking lot and access to the lower levels and visitors bleachers under the American with Disabilities Act. The project has been reviewed by the city staff, and it could include resurfacing, ADA improvements, handicapped parking, and new pavement and striping.

The work would complement a project to replace the demolished visitors bleachers at Blankenship Field, a $455,000 project that was unanimously approved by the Oak Ridge Board of Education in March. The bleachers had been deemed unsafe, and school officials are hoping to replace them before the first home football game on Aug. 29. The school board agreed to use the school system’s fund balance to pay for the replacement bleachers. [Read more…]

Former Lady Dragon hired to lead CHS hoops program

Clinton High School has a new girls’ basketball coach. Athletic Director Dan Jenkins said former Lady Dragon standout Alicia Phillips has been hired to succeed Tonya Lively-Snyder, who stepped down after 15 years on the bench last month.

During her illustrious high school career, Phillips (then Brown) set several school records. After graduating from Clinton, she received a scholarship to play softball for the University of Tennessee and played two seasons there, including an appearance in the Women’s College World Series.

She later transferred to Maryville College, where she continued her softball career and got back on the court for the Lady Scot basketball team. [Read more…]

The 2014 Oak Ridge Wildcat football team will conclude their spring drills with a scrimmage against the South Doyle Cherokees. The scrimmage will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 14 (today), at South Doyle.

The rain date for the scrimmage will be 7 p.m. Friday, May 16. South Doyle will charge $3 per person admittance to the scrimmage. [Read more…]

TSSAA penalizes Clinton, Knox Central soccer teams after brawl

The TSSAA has penalized Clinton and Knox Central high schools for a fight that occurred late in the Bobcats’ 4-2 win Monday night in the District 3-AAA soccer tournament.

The fight broke out with about five minutes to play, apparently after some jawing back and forth between players. Central suffered the most immediate penalty, forfeiting the rest of its season, including Thursday night’s scheduled semifinal game at Gibbs. [Read more…]
