Secret City Festival begins today

The Secret City Festival begins today at 11:30 a.m. and goes through 7 p.m. Saturday at the Oak Ridge Civic Center.

It features children’s activities, a youth area, music, food, history exhibits, bus tours, arts and crafts, and a World War II re-enactment.

Lavender Festival at Jackson Square this weekend

The 14th annual Lavender Festival in historic Jackson Square is happening this Friday and Saturday, and it features herbs, music, food and crafts.

There will also be demonstrations, such as information about growing  your own lavender, “Herbs for Radiant Skin,” and learning about extracting botanical waters.

Oak Ridge Community Band plays July 4

The Oak Ridge Community Band will play its Independence Day concert at 7:30 p.m. July 4 at A.K. Bissell Park.

The free concert, which will precede the city’s fireworks display, will feature the traditional “1812 Overture,” Sousa’s “Stars and Stripes Forever,” some swing, Gershwin’s best pieces, a medley of Henry Mancini’s tunes, and “even some Glenn Miller big band tunes,” a press release said.

Rock and reggae bands will perform in Oak Ridge this weekend.

Knoxville band The Super Dave 5 will play at Lincoln’s Sports Grille on South Illinois Avenue tonight. The band performs classic rock and R&B with a splash of funk.

The show starts around 8 or 8:30 p.m.

Jackson Square hosts Lavender Festival on June 16

Oak Ridge’s Historic Jackson Square will host the 14th Annual Lavender Festival on Saturday, June 16, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The festival will feature information and products related to gardening, cooking, health, and aromatherapy. There will be plants and herbs for sale as well as arts and crafts. Children’s activities will include blow painting, seed planting, a sachet workshop, and more.

Community band performance, veterans ceremony Monday

Two local Memorial Day ceremonies will pay tribute to U.S. military personnel.

The first ceremony will be held at the Veterans Memorial in front of the Anderson County Courthouse in Clinton at 10 a.m. Monday. Tennessee Sen. Randy McNally, an Oak Ridge Republican, will be the guest speaker.

The second ceremony will feature the Oak Ridge Community Band in a free performance at 7 p.m. Monday at A.K. Bissell Park.

Award-winning musician Pat Kane will perform at Peggy's Irish Festival at the Realty Center on June 1.

Peggy and Tom Hanrahan of the Realty Center are having their 18th annual St. Patrick’s Day Party from 5 to 9 p.m. on June 1.

Pat Kane, the two-time winner of the New York City’s Fleadh Cheoil National Festival of Irish Music, will be joining them. He has written many songs and knows many modern selections as well.

Kane has performed at previous St. Patrick’s Day parties at the Realty Center.

A1A, 38 Special to play Secret City Festival

A1A, the original and official Jimmy Buffett Tribute Band, and 38 Special will perform at the Secret City Festival in June.

A1A will perform Friday, June 15. Formed in 1991, A1A will play all of Jimmy Buffett’s hits along with classic reggae and beach party music.

Southern rockers 38 Special, will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 16. 38 Special will perform hits from three decades of music with favorites such as “Hold on Loosely,” “Caught Up in You,” and “Rockin’ Into the Night.”

U.S. Air Force Band to perform Saturday

Secret City Sounds presents the return of the United States Air Force Band of Mid America on Saturday.

This year, they will perform with their ensemble, Starlifter. This seven-member group will play a variety of songs from rock, pop, and jazz to contemporary and traditional patriotic songs.
