Big Ed’s Pizza, Oak Ridge’s most well-known restaurant, is celebrating 50 years on Monday, February 3.

Special merchandise will be available for sale, including 50th anniversary limited editions of Big Ed’s Pizza beer mugs and shirts, a press release said, and there will be free cake from Oak Ridge bakery Sassy Pants Sweets and Treats.

The Big Ed’s staff will be wearing a special “1970” shirt in observance, the press release said.

The festivities start at 11 a.m. Monday.

Founder “Big Ed” Neusel and his wife came to Oak Ridge in February 1970, the press release said. They converted the old Service Drug Store into Big Ed’s Pizza.

Big Ed’s Pizza menu is simple—just pizza and beverages, including beer, the release said.

“Though Big Ed passed away in 1998, his legacy of old-school charm continues to this day by staff cutting their delicious pizzas with scissors and placing carry out orders in paper bags, as Big Ed himself insisted,” the press release said.

“The restaurant’s atmosphere is unique, as the walls and display cases are packed with portraits, trophies, flags, awards, and other memorabilia, including many military photos and souvenirs,” the press release said. “Big Ed’s Pizza’s distinctive caricature logo is recognizable across the globe.”
