A mother identified as a Clinton resident died and her three children were injured in a single-vehicle crash in Knoxville on Saturday morning, authorities said.

The crash was reported at about 6:42 a.m. Saturday at Western Avenue and Mynders Avenue.

When they arrived, Knoxville Police Department officers found a 1998 Ford Explorer that had flipped and was on its side with the driver and three children trapped, the KPD said. Civilians and emergency personnel were able to remove the three children from the vehicle. Their mother died on the scene.

All three children were taken to Children’s Hospital and treated for minor injuries, the KPD said.

The KPD has identified the mother who died as Joyce Holt, 32, of Clinton. The three children are 12, 10, and 8.

According to the preliminary investigation, the vehicle was traveling east on Western Avenue approaching Tennessee Avenue when the driver attempted to negotiate a right-hand turn, the KPD said. The vehicle drifted left, causing the driver to over-correct, which resulted in the vehicle rolling over.

The driver was not wearing a seat belt, the KPD said. All three children in the vehicle were restrained and only suffered minor injuries.

More information will be added as it becomes available.
