A martial arts academy in Oak Ridge is offering a free workshop in October for children and their parents who want to counter bullying.

The CounterBully Seminar is from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, October 1.

It’s being offered by Progressive Martial Arts Academy at 138 Fairbanks Road in Oak Ridge.

There are many forms of bullying, including cyber bullying, verbal abuse, physical violence, and even sexual harassment, a press release said.

The CounterBully Seminar will teach children six years old and older to learn to combat bullying by using confidence as a way to prevent potential physical violence or emotional abuse, the press release said. Participants will also learn proper reporting methods and basic self-defense tactics in case the bullying becomes physical.

The press release said that an estimated 160,000 children miss school each day due to a fear of bullying, but children should not be afraid to go to school.

Parents or legal guardians are required to attend the October 1 seminar with their children because practice and reinforcement at home will maximize the effects of the course, the press release said. Parents will be provided with a step-by-step strategy that details how to react if their child is bullied.

“I know for a fact that these techniques worked extremely well for my brothers, sisters, and I growing up through school, and many of the children and parents that we have taught have reported back to us the effectiveness of these bully prevention skills,” said David Corrigan, owner and chief instructor at Progressive Martial Arts.

The seminar is open to the public. Reservations are required, and space is limited, the press release said. You can register online by visiting counterbully.com or calling (865) 481-8901.
