The Big Ed’s Memorial Golf Tournament on April 28 will benefit Community Mediation Services of Anderson Country, providing participants a great way to give back to the youth and families in the community while having a great day of golf, a press release said.

It’s the 16th Annual Big Ed’s Memorial Golf Tournament. It will be on Friday, April 28, at the Oak Ridge Country Club.

“Oak Ridge Country Club provides a beautiful and challenging setting for all golfers,” the press release said.

The Tournament is a two-session, scramble format with two flights: 8 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Golfers will get a complimentary breakfast, beverage carts, and a smoked barbecue lunch. Prize contests for participants in each flight will be awarded and a Hole-in-One Grand Prize will be available. Free Big Ed’s shirts and golf towels for all golfers are included. A Silent Auction will be held in conjunction with the Tournament. Auction items will be available for viewing online at www.peacefulresolution.org.

The registration deadline is Monday, April 24 ($125/player; $500/team). [Read more…]

Golfers! Spring is finally here, and so is the 14th Annual Big Ed’s Memorial Golf Tournament on Friday, April 24.

Online registration is available through the website: www.peacefulresolution.org. Registration forms are available by calling (865) 463-6888 or e-mailing [email protected]. Early registration is due by Thursday, April 16.

The Big Ed’s tournament is a 14-year-long tradition in Anderson County. It combines a great day of golf at the beautiful Oak Ridge Country Club with an active commitment to youth and families in our area, a press release said. Community Mediation Services has Giant Garage Sale this weekend

Community Mediation Services of Anderson County, or CMS, is having its annual Giant Garage Sale on Friday and Saturday.

The garage sale is scheduled from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the yellow Eagle building at 1650 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

For more than 28 years, CMS has helped hundreds of juveniles and families come up with their own solutions to difficult conflicts and concerns, using well-trained, community volunteer mediators, a press release said. This fall, in addition to its three other mediation programs, CMS will be working with the Anderson County Schools on school attendance (truancy) issues. [Read more…]

To the Editor:

What does it take to be an effective juvenile court judge in Tennessee?

First, in my opinion, would be the ability to know, understand, and apply the laws that impact juveniles and their families or guardians.

Second, that person must have the demeanor to be a judge. He or she must recognize that the position is not based upon winning a popularity contest; or being a “glad-hander” at a community pancake breakfast, for example; or having the most and largest political ads in the local press; or having the most yard signs to the point their number appears to exceed the number of wild onions in a person’s lawn. That candidate must recognize the seriousness of the office and conduct him or herself accordingly.

Third, he or she must have outstanding credentials.

In my judgment, Mr. David Dunkirk exceeds these qualifications. [Read more…]

Without Republicans, little opposition, few questions at League forum

There was little opposition and only a few questions at a Tuesday night candidate forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Oak Ridge.

All of the Democratic candidates were at the League forum, which was held in the Pollard Auditorium at Oak Ridge Associated Universities.

But most of the Republican candidates were a few blocks away at their own forum, and none of them attended the League forum. Still, many sent representatives to speak on their behalf.

The dueling forums were held with less than a month remaining before the May 6 primary election. Most of the competition is on the Republican side, with more than one GOP candidate for mayor, sheriff, chancellor, and Juvenile Court judge. The only contested Democratic race is for juvenile judge. [Read more…]

Attorney David Dunkirk to run for juvenile judge

Longtime attorney David Dunkirk has announced he is seeking the office of Anderson County Juvenile Court judge.

Dunkirk has been practicing law since 1986 and is licensed in three states: Tennessee, California, and Washington.

“When young families and children come before the Juvenile Court, it’s usually because they’re in difficult circumstances,” Dunkirk said. “And I’ve found that this is when they most need good role models. I have done that as guardian ad litem, and if elected I believe I can also do that as juvenile judge.”

Guardians ad litem are appointed for children who have been removed or could potentially be removed from their families due to violations of the Tennessee Code. [Read more…]
