TSBDC hosts free export seminar

The Tennessee Small Business Development Center at Roane State Community College is hosting a free workshop for small business owners and entrepreneurs who want to learn more about succeeding in the global marketplace.

The free workshop covers export financing options (Ex-Im Bank), logistics and freight forwarding, compliance, legal issues, and information about export assistance available, a press release said.

Small business center offers workshops in June, July, August

The Tennessee Small Business Development Center is offering workshops in June, July, and August.

Here is a schedule of workshops:

Topic: Small business start-up

  • Time: 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
  • Location: Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce

This workshop discusses all steps in starting up a new business, to include legal forms of business and financing options.

Franchise EXPO 2015: Educational, interactive expo comes to Knoxville

Have you ever thought about owning your own business? A group of Knoxville organizations led by Jerry Bird, who heads FranNet of Alabama and East Tennessee, are offering a one-day event for those wanting the freedom and control of owning their own business. More than 20 different franchise companies looking to expand into Knoxville and the surrounding areas, as well as business experts who can assist in buying and growing a business, will be in Knoxville for one day.

The Knoxville Franchise EXPO 2015 will be held at the Rothchild Catering and Conference Center at 8807 Kingston Pike in Knoxville from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, April 9. While the majority of the EXPO is available for you to wander and visit as you like, there will also be workshops offered as specific times including franchise funding, networking, and how to go about finding the right franchise fit. U.S. SBA honors Street Legal Industries with small business award

Street Legal Industries Inc. has received the highest recognition by the U. S. Small Business Administration in Tennessee, a press release said. The company was proclaimed “Tennessee Historically Underutilized (HUB) Zone Small Business of the Year.”

Every year since 1963, the U.S. Small Business Administration takes the opportunity to highlight, through National Small Business Week, the impact of outstanding small businesses.

“These award winners represent the many excellent small businesses that we have in the Volunteer State,” said Walter Perry, district director of SBA’s Tennessee District Office.

The award will be presented to Street Legal Industries Inc. at 3 p.m. Thursday, September 25, at their offices at 102A Jefferson Court in Oak Ridge. The presentation will be combined with an open house. Customers and partners of the company are invited to attend. [Read more…]

Free government contracting seminars on Sept. 16

The Tennessee Small Business Development Center will have two free government contracting seminars on September 16.

The first is scheduled from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Tuesday, September 16, at the Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce. During that seminar, the TSBDC at Roane State Community College, in partnership with the  University of Tennessee, CIS-PTAC, will offer a free workshop for small businesses on the basics of government contracting.

The second seminar is scheduled from 1-3 p.m. Tuesday, September 16, also at the Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce. During that seminar, the TSBDC, in partnership with the U.S. Small Business Administration, will offer a free workshop for small businesses on government contracting

Anderson Chamber hosts business planning seminar

The Anderson County Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Tennessee Small Business Development Center, will host a free workshop on Wednesday for small business owners and entrepreneurs who want to increase their chances for successful self-employment, a press release said.

The workshop will also be useful for existing businesses who are looking into obtaining financing. Business plans are required by lenders.

This free seminar will be held from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, at the Anderson County Chamber of Commerce office, 245 N. Main St., Ste., 200, in Clinton, with Jutta Bangs, senior business specialist with the Tennessee Small Business Development Center. Free franchising workshop for veterans on Wednesday

The Tennessee Small Business Development Center, in partnership with FranNet, will offer a free workshop on franchising for veterans on Wednesday.

The seminar is titled “Veterans and Franchising: A Perfect Fit!” It’s scheduled from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce at 1400 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

TSBDC honors Oak Ridge Today with Rising Star Award

Oak Ridge Today Rising Star Award

Jutta Bangs, director of the local Tennessee Small Business Development Center, presents a 2013 Rising Star Award to John Huotari, co-owner and co-publisher of Oak Ridge Today.

The Tennessee Small Business Development Center at Roane State Community College has awarded the 2013 Rising Star Award to Dawn and John Huotari of Oak Ridge Today.

Each year, the Rising Star Award is given by the TSBDC network to a small business client in each of the regions served. The awards recognize the perseverance and successes of the businesses, a press release said.

Local TSBDC Director Jutta Bangs helped Dawn and John Huotari with the start-up and marketing of their online news outlet.

“We would like to thank the TSBDC and Jutta for their help and guidance in getting Oak Ridge Today started,” said John Huotari, co-owner and co-publisher of the local news website. “Their assistance was invaluable, particularly in the start-up phase. Jutta has continued to provide important advice on issues ranging from marketing to website content to hiring employees.” [Read more…]
