The Jefferson County and Maryville games that had been scheduled at Wildcat Arena on Saturday have been canceled.

The Oak Ridge and Fulton games are still scheduled though. The Oak Ridge girls are now scheduled to play Fulton at 6 p.m., and the Oak Ridge-Fulton boys game is scheduled to start at 7:30.

A security improvement project at the Y-12 National Security Complex was completed ahead of schedule and about $20 million under budget, federal officials announced Monday.

The National Nuclear Security Administration’s Security Improvement Project upgraded security at Y-12 by replacing existing alarm stations and access control systems with Argus, a comprehensive security system developed by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, a press release said. The SIP came in about $20 million under the original $72 million budget.

“Maintaining a safe and secure deterrent is one of NNSA’s most important responsibilities,” said NNSA Acting Chief of Defense Nuclear Security Michael Lempke. “SIP is a continuation of NNSA’s goal to use the best, most modern security technology to keep the nation’s nuclear weapons and material secure.” [Read more…]

Organizers could consider separate weekends for Secret City, Lavender festivals

Crowd at Secret City Festival

Thousands of people enjoy the Secret City Festival each year, including the Friday and Saturday night concerts.

Most years, the Secret City and Lavender festivals fall on the same weekend in June.

This year, due to the way they’re scheduled, the two festivals landed on separate weekends. And that gave organizers an opportunity to see how the festivals would do on separate weekends.

Oak Ridge leaf pickup starts Monday

Posted at 1:34 am November 16, 2012
By John Huotari 7 Comments

The citywide leaf pickup program begins Monday, Nov. 19. The schedule is printed below.

Oak Ridge officials said workers will try to follow the schedule as closely as possible, but it is a general guide and pickup dates can vary considerably from the real schedule due to the amount of leaves and weather.

Here a few guidelines for the leaf pickup program:

  • Residents should place their leaves near, but not beyond, the curb. Leaves are not to be placed in the street due to possible clogging of storm drains and posing a traffic hazard. Hazards can be removed by the city at the resident’s cost.
  • Leaves should be free of tree branches and twigs as these can cause the leaf vacuums to clog. Because of their impact on production, leaf piles found to contain these items will not be picked up.
  • All leaves must be placed outside fenced areas. Leaves in plastic bags will also be picked up at the curb during the scheduled program.
  • Only leaves will be collected during this fall’s program. Residents are reminded that the leaf pickup program typically begins the Monday before Thanksgiving each year, while the citywide household trash and brush pickup programs are held during April and May.

For more information, contact Waste Connections of Tennessee at (865) 482-3656.

The leaf pickup schedule can also be found on the city’s website at www.oakridgetn.gov.

Oak Ridge High School adds five minutes to school day

Posted at 8:28 am October 8, 2012
By John Huotari 4 Comments

School days at Oak Ridge High School will be five minutes longer starting today, Oak Ridge High School Principal Jody Goins said in a Sunday e-mail to students, parents, staff, and others.

High school students will now be dismissed at 2:55 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. They will be dismissed at 1:40 p.m. on  Wednesdays, a shorter school day in Oak Ridge.

The new schedule will be in effect through the rest of the school year, Goins said.

“As mentioned previously, it was recently brought to the attention of the Oak Ridge Schools’€™ Board of Education and Superintendent’s office that we need to modify our existing schedule slightly to fulfill the requirement set forth by the Tennessee Department of Education and the Tennessee School Boards Association regarding minimum instructional minutes per day,” Goins said in the e-mail. “In accordance with this requirement, we will be lengthening our instructional day by five minutes every day.”
