Finalists for Roane State president in Oak Ridge, Harriman next week

The three finalists for Roane State Community College president are scheduled to take part in interviews, forums, and receptions next week in Oak Ridge and Harriman.

The three finalists are Elizabeth Lewis, vice president of academic affairs at Northeast Lakeview College in Universal City, Texas; W. Michael Stoy, president of Middle Georgia College in Cochran, Ga.; and Christopher Whaley, vice president of Student Learning and chief academic officer at Roane State Community College in Harriman.

The interviews, forums, and receptions are scheduled on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.

Roane State student wins $500 legal studies scholarship

Roane State Community College paralegal studies student MacKenzie King of Huntsville has received a $500 scholarship from TALS – Legal Professionals of Tennessee.

TALS offers one scholarship per year, an RSCC press release said. King is the first Roane State student to receive the scholarship.

Roane State presents philanthropy awards to Oak Ridge, Anderson County

The Oak Ridge and Anderson County governments recently received state philanthropy awards for their support of an expansion of the local Roane State Community College branch campus.

Both governments contributed $500,000 to a new Health Sciences and Technology Building at the college’s Oak Ridge campus. Roane State said those contributions were key to reaching a $2.5 million fundraising goal.

Recognizing those contributions, Roane State President Gary Goff recently presented Oak Ridge and Anderson County officials with Tennessee Board of Regents Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence in Philanthropy.

Aug. 14 is fee deadline for Roane State’s fall semester

Students who have already registered for fall classes at Roane State Community College need to pay their fees by 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, to avoid deletion of their class schedules, a press release said.

Students can pay their fees at www.roanestate.edu.

Business, education partnership boosts student interest in science, math

An Oak Ridge business and education partnership launched with the help of Roane State Community College has  boosted middle school student interest in science and math.

The students, from seven area school systems, participated in a “Lab-in-a-Box” pilot program by the Rural Communities STEM Initiative, or RCSI, during the past academic year, a press release said.

An evaluation by Roane State found that:

  • 70.9 percent of students responded that the labs increased their interest in science or math.
  • 91.5 percent of students reported that they liked doing the labs.
  • 85 percent of students achieved a high level (80 percent or greater) of competence in the state standards addressed with each Lab-in-a-Box.
  • 67.6 percent of students wrote that the labs motivated them to achieve in science or math.

Officials break ground for Roane State building

Roane State Groundbreaking

Local and state officials break ground Tuesday for a three-story Health Sciences and Technology Building at Roane State Community College in Oak Ridge.

Several hundred people watched Tuesday morning as local, state, and education officials dug up the first shovelfuls of dirt for a new three-story building at Roane State Community College.

Construction work on the 63,000-square-foot Health Sciences and Technology Building will start next week and could be complete by January 2014, RSCC President Gary Goff said during a groundbreaking ceremony at the Oak Ridge campus.

Roane State offers safety courses for educators

Roane State Community College’s Continuing Healthcare Education Department will offer a program designed to teach educators how to safely respond to a physical altercation on school grounds.

Nationally recognized personal safety expert Tom Patire developed the SchoolSafe program and will lead two class sessions.

Roane State dean’s list released

Several students in this area made the spring dean’s list at Roane State Community College, according to a press release from Roane State.

To be eligible, a student must have had at least a 3.5 grade point average while attempting 12 or more semester hours of college-level courses.

Roane State to participate in summer jobs program

This summer, Roane State Community College is participating in the Obama Administration’s Summer Jobs+ program, which is part of the American Jobs Act.

As part of the program, Roane State will offer free life-skills and work-skills classes to 50 people age 16-24. These classes will include training in money management, conflict resolution, how to apply for a job online, resume writing, and others.
