Youth Board meets Wednesday afternoon

The Oak Ridge Youth Advisory Board will meet at 2:05 p.m. Wednesday, February 4, in the Oak Ridge Civic Center Social Room.

The agenda includes a discussion of Family Day at the Civic Center from noon to 4 p.m. February 14; a Nashville trip from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, February 25; Battle of the Teen Bands on April 25; Chamber Meeting with YLOR at 2 p.m. February 11; and Graduation Celebration senior surveys.

The Oak Ridge Youth Advisory Board members recently voted to spend time and money Christmas shopping at Kmart for area children through Mission of Hope.

The board raises funds at various events throughout the year to make this possible, a press release said.

The board spent a total of $1,664.73 on gifts. [Read more…]

Graduation Celebration 2013

Plans for the 17th annual Graduation Celebration on May 29 are well under way.

Graduation Celebration is an all-night, safe party for our city’s graduates from Oak Ridge High School, homeschool, or private schools.

The party began in 1997, after several tragic deaths during the graduation season, and today about 90 percent of ORHS graduates attend each year. [Read more…]

Teen Battle of the Bands on April 25 includes prizes, family fun

Teen Battle of the Bands

This year’s Teen Battle of the Bands is on Friday, April 25, at the Oak Ridge Civic Center, and it will include prizes and family fun, organizers said.

It’s scheduled from 6-9 p.m. at the Civic Center Pavilion, and it’s sponsored by Y-12 Federal Credit Union and the Oak Ridge Youth Advisory Board.

If the weather is bad, the event will be held at the Paradox Teen Center on New York Avenue. [Read more…]

YAB, Youth Leadership take educational trip to Nashville

The Oak Ridge Youth Advisory Board and Youth Leadership Oak Ridge groups combined forces and took an educational trip to Nashville on Wednesday, Feb. 19.

While in Nashville, students attended a state committee meeting and participated in a mock Senate session led by Sen. Randy McNally and Rep. John Ragan, a press release said. The group also toured the State Capitol Building, the Tennessee State Museum, and LP Field, home of the Tennessee Titans.

The Oak Ridge Youth Advisory Board members recently agreed to spend time and money Christmas shopping at Kmart for area children through Mission of Hope.

The board raises funds at events throughout the year to make this possible and spent $1,639.78 on gifts, a press release said.

The YAB would like to encourage other student groups and families to consider holiday projects that help those in need, while also reminding everyone to shop in Oak Ridge this holiday season, the press release said.

Youth Board has free Turkey Bowl Disc Golf on Sunday

The Oak Ridge Youth Advisory Board will host Turkey Bowl Disc Golf on Sunday.

It starts at 2 p.m. Sunday at Groves Park Disc Golf Course on Tuskegee Drive. That’s the former South Hills Golf Course site.

The event is part of Oak Ridge’s Playful City USA initiative. Participants of all ages are welcome to try this sport, which is growing in popularity, a press release said. Free “Turkey Bowl” logo discs will be provided to participants while supplies last. [Read more…]

The Oak Ridge Youth Advisory Board recently started its 22nd year with new members, the first meeting of the 2013-2014 term, and officer elections.

YAB member Kelsey Warmbrod, an Oak Ridge High School senior serving in her fifth term of office, was elected chairwoman, a press release said. In other elections, fourth-year member Shane Harris was elected vice chair, senior Abby Douglas was elected secretary, and Peter Magill was elected treasurer. [Read more…]

The Oak Ridge Youth Advisory Board hosted a Youth Dodgeball Tournament on Saturday, March 2.

The double-elimination tournament featured six teams with players ranging from sixth grade through 12th grade.

The Goslings faced off against the Globo Gym Purple Cobras in the championship match, with the Goslings winning 3-2.

The Oak Ridge Youth Advisory Board is seeking vendors for a Summer Jobs and Career Fair for Teens in February.

The jobs and careers fair will be from 2-4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, in the Oak Ridge High School Café.

It will introduce students to possible summer job opportunities, future careers, and to potential colleges as well, a press release said. It will also serve as an excellent opportunity for vendors to meet potential employees.

The 13th Annual Breakfast with Santa was at the Grove Theater on Saturday.

It was hosted by the Oak Ridge Youth Advisory Board and Grove Theater. Matt Reedy, the city staff liaison to the YAB, submitted a few photos from the event.

Activities at Saturday’s Breakfast with Santa included a breakfast buffet, Christmas crafts, holiday movies in the theater, and photos with Santa.
