World-renowned Poulenc Trio to perform in Oak Ridge

The Poulenc Trio, the most active touring piano-wind chamber music ensemble in the world, will perform in Oak Ridge on Saturday, March 18, a press release said.

The concert is presented by the Oak Ridge Civic Music Association. It is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. March 18 at the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church.

In a recent review, the New York Times praised the trio for its “elegant rendition” of Piazzolla’s “Tangos,” the press release said. The Washington Post said the trio “does its namesake proud” in “an intriguing and beautifully played program” with “convincing elegance, near effortless lightness, and grace,” the release said.

The trio includes oboist James Austin Smith, bassoonist Bryan Young, and pianist Irina Kaplan. [Read more…]

Rummage sale at ORUUC on Friday, Saturday

Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church will have its popular semi-annual rummage sale on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. ORUUC is located at 809 Oak Ridge Turnpike. The proceeds that are raised will help to support various community outreach ministries of the church, a press release said.

Items that will be available will include low-priced kitchenware, small appliances, furniture, linens, home décor clothing, shoes and accessories for the family, books, tools, jewelry, DVDs, exercise equipment, computers, and other electronic devices, the press release said. Prices are doubled on Friday evening for the Preview Sale, which offers best selections at still-a-bargain prices, the press release said. [Read more…]

Alternatives to Incarceration director to speak at Lunch with the League on Tuesday

The director of Alternatives to Incarceration in Anderson County will discuss the program—which is designed to save taxpayers money by reducing jail overcrowding while helping inmates—during a Tuesday afternoon lunch, a press release said.

The director is Mary Ann Young. She is the featured speaker at Lunch with the League at noon Tuesday, March 7, in the Social Hall of the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church. The church is located at 809 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

The press release said Alternatives to Incarceration provides a variety of work, vocational training, and counseling services.

Woody to discuss State of Roane County at Lunch with League on Tuesday

Roane County Executive Ron Woody will discuss Roane County issues during Lunch with the League on Tuesday, February 21. The program will be held from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Social Hall of the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church, which is located at 809 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

Woody said he will talk about such topics as Roane County economic development, education, the impact of legislation, the county jail, and the impending airport. There will be time for questions from the audience following his presentation, a press release said.

Woody was first elected in August 2010. Formerly a consultant with the University of Tennessee’s County Technical Advisory Service, he is a certified public accountant with years of experience in county fiscal management jobs, the press release said. [Read more…]

Organizers said they expected about 70 people. Instead, roughly 500 people showed up.

It was the “Standing in Solidarity” event hosted by the Anderson County Democratic Party at Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church on Saturday, January 21.

The purpose was to show support with the worldwide protests of President Donald Trump, said Scott Julius of the Anderson County Democratic Party. He said there were tables from 20 different progressive organizations at the January 21 event.

Lunch with League: Success of middle college at Roane State, area high schools

An official from Roane State Community College will provide an overview of the college’s Middle College during a Tuesday meeting.

Diane Ward, vice president for student learning at Roane State Community College, will be the guest speaker at Lunch with the League on Tuesday, February 7. The program will be held at noon in the Social Hall of the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church, which is located at 809 Oak Ridge Turnpike. The public is invited.

“Middle College is a program where rising high school juniors carry a full college schedule in the morning and a high school schedule in the afternoon,” Ward said in a press release. “The goal is for these students to obtain a high school diploma and an associate’s degree at the same time. Currently, Roane State is in partnership with three different school systems to offer this program on three of our campuses.” [Read more…]

Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church will host the February PFLAG meeting on Monday, February 6. Upcoming Tennessee legislation affecting the LGBTQ community will be the topic, a press release said.

Social time will begin at 6:45 p.m. The meeting will be from 7 to 8 p.m.

Community invited to World Harmony Week celebration at ORUUC

The Oak Ridge Interfaith Partnership will celebrate World Harmony Week on Thursday, February 2, at Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church. The church is located at 809 Oak Ridge Turnpike, near traffic light number two.

Speakers from diverse traditions will speak about aspects of their faith they feel are important and often misunderstood, a press release said.

Mix and Mingle will be start at 6:30 p.m., the press release said. Presentations will be from 7 to 8 p.m. That will be followed an opportunity for dialogue and fellowship, the press release said. The Stone Soup Ministry team at Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church will be serving a free community meal on Friday, January 27. Dine-in or take-out will be available from 5 to 6 p.m.

Students will be admitted for free to the Cumberland Piano Trio concert in Oak Ridge on Saturday.

The concert is presented by the Oak Ridge Civic Music Association. It starts at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, January 21, at the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church.

Established in 2013 as an outgrowth of the Oak Ridge Civic Music Association’s Isotone series, the Cumberland Piano Trio has become well-known for championing the works of 21st-century composers, a press release said.

The Cumberland Piano Trio made its New York recital debut at Symphony Space with Isotone in May of 2016. [Read more…]

Women’s Solidarity Event to be held Saturday in Oak Ridge

What started as a grass roots calling on a Facebook page a few days after the November election quickly morphed into what estimates now suggest could be more than 200,000 people who will join in the Women’s March on Washington on January 21, the day after the inauguration of President Donald Trump, a press release said.

Those who would like to stand in solidarity with the Women’s March but are unable to make the 500-mile journey will have a place to gather in Anderson County, the press release said. Everyone is welcome to attend a progressive organizations fair on Saturday, January 21, from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Social Hall of the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church, which is located at 809 Oak Ridge Turnpike, the release said. City manager to discuss economic development at Lunch with League on Tuesday

Oak Ridge City Manager Mark Watson will discuss what the city needs to do to stay competitive in today’s economic development market during a Tuesday lunch.

Watson will be at Lunch with the League from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, January 17, in the Social Hall of the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church, which is located at 809 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

Watson has been Oak Ridge city manager since August 2010. Before coming to Oak Ridge, he served as city manager of six cities in Texas, Montana, and Arizona. He is a graduate of the University of Kansas, where he received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in public administration, a press release said.
