A lockdown was lifted at Oak Ridge High School Thursday morning after a staff member called police saying she spotted an unknown person walking outside one of the buildings.

The initial call came into the Oak Ridge Police Department at 10:52 a.m. Thursday, authorities said. The first officers were on scene within minutes and the school was placed on a level three lockdown.

The staff member told officers she saw a man dressed in all black clothing walking by the windows of the Secret City Academy building. She and other staff said they were alarmed after seeing the man act suspiciously, possibly jumping over a fence and several railings, so they called police, a City of Oak Ridge press release said.

ORPD officers searched the exterior school property while the school resource officer assisted staff inside the school. No one was found. Officers believe the person left the area before they arrived. [Read more…]

Workers at the East Tennessee Technology Park, the former K-25 site, were asked to shelter in place for about 30 minutes early Thursday afternoon as police officers searched for an armed person who had been reported to be traveling from the Clinton area to west Oak Ridge.

It was the same search that led to a brief lockdown at Jefferson Middle School at about 1 p.m. Thursday, said Mike Koentop, U.S. Department of Energy spokesman in the Oak Ridge Office.

“It was not related at all to any DOE activity,” Koentop said. “Steps were taken as a precaution.” [Read more…]

Oak Ridge National Laboratory was locked down for more than four hours on Sunday as officials investigated a security-related concern that turned out to be unsubstantiated, a spokesman said.

Officials took the proper precautions and stopped people from entering or leaving the lab during the lockdown, which lasted from about 8:40 a.m. to about 1:15 p.m. Sunday, ORNL Communications Director David Keim said.

“When we investigated, we found that the concern was unsubstantiated,” Keim said.

He said the security concern was reported by a U.S. Department of Energy contractor employee at ORNL. Keim said he couldn’t give more information on the nature of the report since the concern wasn’t substantiated.
