Boy Scouts place flags on veterans’ graves for Memorial Day

Boy Scout Troop 328 from Kern United Methodist Church met at the church and proceeded to the Anderson Memorial Gardens where they were met by members of the American Legion Post #199 with a breakfast donated by Bojangles of Oak Ridge.

The Troop had 20 scouts and 10 adults participate in placing a flag on each veteran’s grave within the cemetery. After placing the flags, they visited the grave of James Johnston, an Eagle Scout from the troop and veteran who died last year, to pay their respects.

Next, the Troop went over to Woodhaven Memorial Gardens (Tennessee Valley Memorial Gardens). After placing the flags, they were treated to refreshments by the cemetery staff and were done around noon. On Tuesday, May 31, they planned to meet to retrieve the flags and retain them for next year’s placement. [Read more…]

Kern United Methodist Church will hold its annual Alternative Gift Fair Saturday, December 5, in the church’s Family Life Center from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

“Shop the World Gifts” of Englewood, Tennessee, a Fair Trade ministry, will have booths full of beautiful, useful gifts for everyone on your list. Fair Trade is a global ministry that has been fighting world poverty and hunger successfully for more than 60 years. They help some of the poorest people in the world…third world artisans who certainly are among “the least of these.” These artisans have been blessed with tremendous artistic ability but have no market for their products. Every purchase makes a difference. By bringing these handmade creations (e.g., jewelry, purses, pottery, woven goods, baskets, table linens, musical instruments, shawls, scarves, skirts, etc.) to their customers, “Shop the World Gifts” helps these artisans feed and educate their children and build better lives. Their customers benefit by receiving a unique quality product at a reasonable price, knowing there was no forced or child labor involved and that the product was made in an environmentally sustainable manner.

At the Heifer International booth, shoppers may choose to donate farm animals to help families around the world become self-reliant. In honor of Heifer, a live llama will visit Kern Church during the Alternative Gift Fair. Your favorite Fair Trade Equal Exchange coffees and chocolates will be available for purchase. Kern United Methodist Church presents Christian rock band The Shine Effect in concert on Sunday.

The concert starts at 5 p.m. Sunday, September 20, during reViVe@5. It’s a free all-ages concert.

Organizers said child care will be provided for kids under age 4. Light snacks will be provided.

Kern United Methodist Church will have its annual Alternative Gift Fair this Saturday, December 6, in the church’s Family Life Center from 9 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.

This annual event offers unique gift items that help end hunger and poverty for the families of artisans in economically disadvantaged areas around the globe. “Shop the World Gifts” of Englewood, Tennessee, and “Moja Fair Trade Fashions” of Maryville, Tennessee, will have booths full of beautiful, useful gifts for everyone on your list. Moja works directly with artisans in Kenya and Uganda to provide ethically produced and fashionable jewelry, accessories and home décor, while Shop the World Gifts obtains their merchandise through missionaries and several fair trade organizations. Kern Methodist has ‘Living Last Supper’ on Maundy Thursday

On the eve of Jesus’ Crucifixion, Jesus and the twelve Apostles met in an Upper Room in Jerusalem to observe the Passover. At this meal, Jesus instituted the Lord’s Supper, a memorial observed by Christians to this day. As they ate together, Jesus announced that one of them would betray Him. Leonardo da Vinci sought to capture their reactions in his famous painting, “The Last Supper.”

Several members of Kern United Methodist Church will recreate this masterpiece on Maundy Thursday, March 28, in a dramatic interpretation of “The Living Last Supper” at 7 p.m. in the church’s Family Life Center. The need is greater than ever.

As families continue to struggle across the country, local organizations like the Great Smoky Mountain Council of the Boy Scouts of America are striving to make a difference close to home.

On Feb. 9, Boy Scouts from Troop 224 from Grace Lutheran Church; Troop 328 from Kern United Methodist Church; and Cub Scouts from Pack 328 and Girl Scouts from Troop 20737, both from First United Methodist Church, teamed up to collect donations in the annual Scouting for Food drive. Donations were collected from neighborhoods throughout Oak Ridge and delivered to the Grace Lutheran Food Pantry. Additionally, Pack 328 led collection efforts at First United Methodist and Woodland Elementary—rewarding the leading classroom at Woodland with a pizza party.

Kern United Methodist Church has an alternative craft fair on Saturday. It starts at 9 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m.

A press release said the fair will offer shoppers the chance to get unique gifts that make a difference; help provide income, hope, and dignity for some of the world’s poorest people; provide stewardship of the Earth’s resources; and support local and global programs that change lives.
