Aubrey’s fundraiser night benefits Girls Inc. of Oak Ridge

Aubrey’s of Oak Ridge is hosting a fundraiser night on Monday to support Girls Inc. of Oak Ridge.

Aubrey’s is located at 481 S. Illinois Ave.

“Invite all your friends and family to dine with us at Aubrey’s, and 10 percent of the proceeds will be donated to Girls Inc.!” a press release said.

The local Girls Inc. at 1798 Oak Ridge Turnpike is part of a national nonprofit youth organization dedicated to inspiring all girls to be strong, smart, and bold. Girls Inc. provides educational programs to millions of American girls, the release said. [Read more…]

Girls Inc. aviation program features hot air balloon rides

Girls Inc. recently received a grant for $10,000 from the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, or AOPA.

The grant is allowing the nonprofit organization to have a “Sky Girls” aviation program. In that program, the girls will learn about air traffic controllers and their alphabet, women in aviation, and weather experiments, have field trips to an aviation museum, and hear from women pilots, a press release said.

In November, the girls were able to ride in a tethered hot air balloon from Tennessee Balloon Rides, the release said.

The festive spirit of a New York Christmas holiday will transform the Pollard Center for an evening of glitz and glamour on Saturday, Nov. 16. It’s the 19th Annual Parade of Trees, a benefit for Girls Inc. of Oak Ridge.

“Beautifully decorated and lighted trees, wreaths, centerpieces, and of course, mistletoe, will enhance the magical atmosphere of a night in Manhattan,” a press release said. “In addition, this year’s ‘Park Avenue’ gift shop will feature unique hostess gifts and items to make your holiday table sparkle. Jams, jellies, and baked treats (tastings will be available) can be purchased in gift bags ready to deliver to a special friend. Don’t need a new Christmas tree? Girls Inc. has fundraising pancake breakfast on Saturday

Girls Inc. will have a pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday at Applebee’s.

Tickets ($5 ) may be purchased at Girls Inc. or at the door.

Funds raised will assist in providing programs that will help girls be strong, smart, and bold, a press release said. Applebee’s is at 1213 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

It was in need of renovations, and the middle school room at Girls Inc. of Oak Ridge has received a makeover from the Oak Ridge Leadership Class of 2013, a press release said.

The Leadership Class had selected Girls Inc. as their 2013 community project, and members repainted the walls of the middle school room, made wall-mounted tables with raised plugs for electronic devices, created a study area, and added new pillows, organizer bins, tables, lamps, and chairs, the release said. Sport 4 Peace co-founder to address Girls Inc. Committee of 100

Sarah Hillyer, co-founder of Sport 4 Peace, will be the guest speaker at the Girls Inc. of Oak Ridge annual Committee of 100 luncheon on Feb. 15 at New Hope Center, 602 Scarboro Road, Oak Ridge.

The annual luncheon honors a select group of women who each contribute $100 or more to help address the growth and development of girls through programs offered at Girls Inc. The luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 15. Girls Inc. invites women of the community to join the committee. To become a member of the Committee of 100 and attend the luncheon, contact Carol Mullane, executive director of Girls Inc. of Oak Ridge, at  (865) 482-4475.

This weekend: arts and crafts, ballet, theater, half-marathon

There is much to do in Oak Ridge this weekend, ranging from arts, crafts, and theater to ballet, disc golf, and a half marathon.

We’ve already posted stories about some of the events, including today’s cash mob and “The Wiz” at Oak Ridge Playhouse. We’ve also written about the Secret City Half Marathon and free Turkey Bowl Disc Golf on Sunday.

But we’ve also added several new events to our new events calendar. They include an arts and crafts fair at the Oak Ridge Civic Center, Girls Inc. Parade of Trees at Pollard Auditorium, Folk Art Nativities at Oak Ridge Art Center, and “The Nutcracker” ballet at Oak Ridge High School. Those are all happening today, although there is another performance of “The Nutcracker” tomorrow (Sunday).
