A coffeehouse at First Presbyterian Church on Friday will raise money for the Emory Valley Center.
The coffeehouse “promises to be fun-filled and very musical,” and it will feature 11 acts and 19 performers, a press release said. The performances will include folksy guitar plucking, women’s a capella, and modern dance.
The night will help the Emory Valley Center launch its final year of fundraising for a new building on Emory Valley Road, the release said.
The coffeehouses are operated by college students, and they are designed to provide an enjoyable musical venue while also raising funds for worthy causes in Oak Ridge. [Read more…]

College students who are home for the holidays are hosting a coffeehouse fundraiser with live music on tonight (Friday night) from 7 to 10 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Free Medical Clinic of Oak Ridge.
The young adults hope to generate enough proceeds tonight to give a “very merry†Christmas to the clinic. The coffeehouses have become a reliable and persistent funding source for the clinic. The students have donated more than $12,000 since 2011 from the coffeehouse.
“We give them 100 percent of what we bring in, †said Sumner Byrne, George Washington University student and event organizer. “It feels great to be making a difference.â€
Byrne said many students who participate attend different colleges.
“This is a great place to get together, enjoy old friends, and make some new ones,” Byrne said. “The coffeehouse music provided by local musicians is always superb, and we raise money for a good cause. How much better can it get?†[Read more…]

The First Presbyterian Church of Oak Ridge will hold its second annual Service of Memory and Hope at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the sanctuary.
“This candlelight service is for those who seek a peaceful setting to remember loved ones and friends who are no longer with us, those who are currently going through a difficult time in their lives, and those who, for whatever reason, find this time of year to be particularly hard,†said the Rev. Sharon Youngs, church pastor.
The service will feature an opportunity to light candles in memory of loved ones, prayer, and comforting music presented by the Rev. Youngs on guitar and Music Director Anna Thomas on flute.
Child care will be offered during the service. The church is located at the northeast corner of Oak Ridge Turnpike and Lafayette Drive.
The Oak Ridge Branch of the AAUW has its annual Holiday Tea from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church.
The AAUW, or American Association of University Women, is a national organization that works to provide scholarships, fellowships, and grants to assist women in pursuit of their education and careers. The public is invited to attend.
The tea is in Room 106 at First Presbyterian Church at the corner of Oak Ridge Turnpike and Lafayette.

A retired distinguished staff member at Oak Ridge National Laboratory will discuss Thursday evening whether small modular nuclear reactors, such as the one proposed in west Oak Ridge, can rejuvenate nuclear power.
The presentation by Kent Williams starts at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Fellowship Hall at First Presbyterian Church in Oak Ridge.
Many people in the nuclear industry say that small modular reactors, or SMRs, are key to a revitalized nuclear industry in the U.S. and overseas because of their projected market, safety, and economic characteristics, a press release said. Taking a cue from the book, “The Girls of the Atomic City,” by Denise Kiernan, the Monday luncheon program of the AAUW Oak Ridge Branch will feature a panel of Girls of the Secret City, a press release said.
Colleen Black, Lynn Fortenbery, Cleva Marrow, and Dot Wilkinson will share their experiences about how they came to Oak Ridge from various states and the early days in the new community and their varied jobs, the release said. A Coffee Concert at First Presbyterian Church this evening will feature Ilia Steinschneider and Sean Claire on violin, Eunsoon Corliss on viola, and Eunsook Jung on piano.
The concert starts at 7:30 p.m., and it will feature music by Beethoven, Chopin, Sarasate, Toselli, and Mozart. It’s been organized by the Oak Ridge Civic Music Association.

Altrusa International of Oak Ridge will launch a weekly gathering of international women called Women of the World, or WOW, on Thursday, Sept. 12. The gathering will welcome women from countries around the world who are interested in making friends, practicing English, and learning more about Oak Ridge and its resources.
The group will hold its first meeting at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, in Room 102 of the Activities Building of the First Presbyterian Church, 1051 Oak Ridge Turnpike at Lafayette Drive, for the beginning of a 12-week program this fall and winter. [Read more…]

First Presbyterian Church will host a 100-Mile Potluck meal from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday on its soccer field off Lafayette Drive. The field is behind the sanctuary building at 1051 Oak Ridge Turnpike.
Everyone in the Oak Ridge community is invited to bring a dish for six to eight people, a press release said. Attendees are encouraged to bring plates and utensils, as well as lawn chairs or comfortable blankets to sit on. Drinks will be provided. [Read more…]

Since April 21, environmental activist Bill McKibben’s “Do the Math†movie has been shown around the nation and world. Its message is that catastrophic climate change looms large this century if fossil fuel use is not restricted.
In Oak Ridge, the movie has been shown several times at First Presbyterian Church, which is sponsoring McKibben’s lecture on Sunday, Aug. 18, at 7 p.m. at the Oak Ridge High School Performing Arts Center. The movie can be downloaded from McKibben’s grassroots organization www.350.org.
The author of two classics of environmental literature, “The End of Nature,†and “Eaarth: Making a Life on a Tough New Planet,†McKibben had the movie made after 350.org’s successful “Do the Math†tour of cities last fall. “Global Warming’s Terrifying New Math,†McKibben’s article a year ago in Rolling Stone magazine, inspired the tour. This summer, vacation Bible school at First Presbyterian Church for children two years old through rising fifth-grade students will have a new twist.
