Maddy Moody, a junior at Anderson County High School, finished third in the state in cross country in the championship race in Nashville this month.

Moody improved 13 spots from last year, when she finished 16th as a sophomore in the girls’ Class AAA state cross country championship meet at Percy Warner Park in Nashville.

Moody finished the 5,000-meter, or 5k, race in 18:51.53 this year in the Division I Large Schools category. That compared to 19:30.59 last year in what was previously the Division I Class AAA category.

“It’s a huge improvement,” said Derek Wallace, who coaches cross country and boys’ basketball at Anderson County. “You don’t often see those types of improvements down there.”

Moody normally races with a pacing watch, but she handed it to her mother this year, Wallace said. [Read more…]

The young Oak Ridge Lady Wildcats soccer team picked up its second district win and second shutout with a 5-0 victory over Karns at home on Tuesday.

The Lady Wildcats (4-1, 2-0 District 3-AAA) outshot Karns 29-4. Freshman Katie O’Brien scored two of Oak Ridge’s five goals.

Oak Ridge opened the regular season with an 11-0 win at Anderson County on Tuesday, August 16.

The Lady Wildcats have eight freshman listed on the roster of 20 players. Four of the eight started this past Tuesday. Oak Ridge Coach Jeff Trombly said the young team is struggling with consistency.

“It’s a work in progress,” Trombly said, after the girls’ first regular-season home game. [Read more…]

HARDIN VALLEY—The Oak Ridge Wildcats opened their track and field season at Hardin Valley on Saturday, March 26.

The boys and girls teams finished about in the middle of the pack, Wildcats Coach Allen Etheridge said. The girls team was 11th out of 29 teams, and the boys were 18th in a field of 27.

But the teams didn’t set up to “score a ton of points,” Etheridge said.

The Wildcats were missing a few athletes, and with many new students on the team, they were trying new athletes in a few events and experimenting with different combinations.

“I saw a lot to be happy about,” Etheridge said. The teams have potential to be really good, Etheridge said.

The season opener was the Hardin Valley Academy Invitational. It featured 39 teams and 896 athletes.
