Knoxville Film Festival to screen ‘The Clinton 12’

The Fourth Annual Knoxville Film Festival will present a special screening of the acclaimed documentary film “The Clinton 12” on Sunday, August 28, at 3 p.m. at the Regal Downtown West Cinema 8 in Knoxville. The screening is in honor of the 60th anniversary of the integration of Clinton High School in Clinton and the 10th anniversary of both the film and the opening of the Green McAdoo Cultural Center in Clinton.

Narrated by award-winning actor James Earl Jones, “The Clinton 12” tells the compelling story of the integration of the first public high school in the South as a result of the Brown vs. Board of Education decision by the U.S. Supreme Court, a press release said. The title refers to the 12 black teenagers who, in the fall of 1956, were forced to attend the all-white high school in Clinton, Tennessee.

“The Knoxville Film Festival is proud to bring this story to our audience,” said Keith McDaniel, director of “The Clinton 12” and co-founder/executive director of the Knoxville Film Festival. “This has been, and continues to be, an important story about courage and determination. Community meeting on Student Activities Center at CHS

A public meeting will be held in the Clinton High School auditorium at 6 p.m. August 22 to provide information regarding the Student Activities Center planned at Clinton High School. The center is often referred to as a “multi-sports complex.”

The meeting could be of interest to community members who want to know more about where the project will be located, the uses of the building, and the status of the fundraising effort. Attendees will be encouraged to ask questions, so if you are a curious Clinton Dragon fan, you should attend and learn more about the ambitious project.

Roane State to celebrate its LEAP grant on Leap Day

Roane State Community College received a workforce development grant last year, and the school will celebrate the LEAP grant on February 29, Leap Day, with mechatronics demonstrations, robotics teams from area high schools, and refreshments.

“Because Monday, February 29, is Leap Day, it’s the perfect time for Roane State Community College to celebrate its LEAP grant,” a press release said.

The $970,000 Labor Education Alignment Program, or LEAP, grant helped Roane State expand its one-year mechatronics program into a two-year degree and to offer dual credit mechatronics course for students at area high schools.

The Leap Day celebration is scheduled from 9-11 a.m. on Monday, February 29, at the college’s Higher Education and Workforce Training Facility in Clinton at 214 Nave Street. The public is invited. [Read more…]

CLAYTON—Here are pictures from the Friday afternoon ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Anderson County Animal Holding Facility on Blockhouse Valley Road in Claxton.

The new 12-kennel animal holding facility gives the county a place to hold stray dogs and dogs held for other reasons, such as animals rescued or taken away from crashes, drug busts, and drunken driving arrests, officials said. It opened about four weeks ago and only holds dogs now.

CLAXTON—A new animal holding facility in Anderson County gives the county a place to hold stray dogs and dogs held for other reasons, such as animals rescued or taken away from crashes, drug busts, and drunken driving arrests, officials said Friday.

The new 12-kennel Anderson County Animal Holding Facility is on Blockhouse Valley Road in Claxton, at the Blockhouse Valley Recycling Center.

It helps the county deal with a shortage of space elsewhere, including at the Oak Ridge Animal Shelter, Anderson County Mayor Terry Frank said.

It’s not a shelter yet, but that’s part of the long-term plan. Officials and volunteers said the holding facility is just the first step for them. [Read more…]

Red Ribbon Rivalry this month, buy ribbon for substance abuse prevention

The 2016 Red Ribbon Rivalry is this month. It’s sponsored by Allies for Substance Abuse Prevention of Anderson County, or ASAP.

This year, in Anderson County, ASAP is holding the Red Ribbon Rivalry during the month of January, culminating on Sunday, January 31. The main goal is to raise funds to prevent and reduce substance abuse here in Anderson County.

Local businesses are competing against each other by selling red ribbons for a $1 donation and displaying them in their businesses to show support for substance abuse prevention. The winning businesses and employees will receive recognition for their efforts as well as individual prizes for the top sales associates. Anderson County High School, Clinton High School, and Oak Ridge High School are also competing this year to see who will be the recipient of the Red Ribbon Rivalry trophy to be displayed at their school for the year. CLINTON—The public is invited to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Anderson County Animal Holding Facility at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, January 29.

The facility marks a major milestone and advancement in the care and welfare of animals in Anderson County and is part of a larger, long-term plan to build an independent, county-operated state-of-the-art facility, a press release said.

On hand to celebrate will be longtime former Anderson County Commissioner Robin Biloski, who will be travelling from Florida to participate in the special event.

“Our new Animal Holding Facility clearly shows how a government effectively worked to help its residents on a neglected quality-of-life issue,” Biloski said. “Anderson County has proudly demonstrated how numerous people can come together to create a reality that our citizens have wanted and needed for so long. This issue continues to be so important to me that I left sunny Florida to be part of this inaugural event and pledge to continue to work on this initiative. Clinton High School quarterback Tyler Thackerson has announced that he has committed to play college football at Carson-Newman. Thackerson made the decision last week, but he made it public on Tuesday.

A three-year starter at Clinton, Thackerson holds virtually every Dragon passing record, and in his career, he threw for more than 9,500 yards and accounted for a total of 104 passing and rushing touchdowns.

This season, Thackerson threw for more than 3,900 yards and 32 touchdowns, while also scoring 13 times via the ground game.

Lots of basketball this weekend in Oak Ridge, Clinton, Anderson County

If you like watching high school basketball, then this is the weekend for you, with two holiday hoops tournaments and a two-day basketball showcase right in Oak Ridge, Clinton, and Anderson County.

The Don W. Lockard Invitational at Clinton High School begins on Friday at 12:30 p.m., continues Saturday at 9:30 a.m. and concludes on Sunday beginning at 12:30 p.m.

In addition to the boys and girls teams from Clinton, squads from Cannon County, Meigs County, Stone Memorial, Claiborne County, Sullivan North, and Knoxvill Central will participate.

Tickets for the Friday session (six games) are $6; tickets for Saturday’s eight-game session are $12, and tickets for the consolation and championship games Sunday are $6. You can also purchase a three-day tournament pass for $20. [Read more…]

On Friday night, the Campbell County Cougars spoiled Homecoming at Clinton High School by outlasting the Dragons 41-35 in overtime.

Josh Lay was impressive for the Cougars (3-2, 2-0 in Region 3-5A), rushing for 301 yards and three touchdowns—including the game-winner in OT—on 45 carries and throwing for three scores on 14-of-28 passing for 234 yards.

Tyler Thackerson went 25-of-38 passing for 293 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions, while also rushing for two scores and 80 yards. [Read more…]

The Clinton High School football team will host the Tennessee Orthopedic Clinic Jamboree on Friday, August 14, at Dragon Stadium in downtown Clinton.

It starts at 6 p.m. with Grace Christian squaring off against Claiborne. That will be followed by a skills competition, and then the Dragons will face Union County in the nightcap.

WYSH Radio’s Fox and Farley Friday Night Football returns Friday, August 21, at 7 p.m. when the Orange and Black head to Oak Ridge for a season-opening showdown with the Wildcats.

Alumni from Clinton High School have proposed a better facility for current and future student athletes. They have plans for a 12,000-square-foot multi-sport complex that could be used as a practice facility for several sports and host volleyball matches and wrestling meets.

The facility would include a weight training area, and artificial surface practice field for football, band, cheerleaders, and dance teams. A second story would have office space for coaches and a film room, according to plans posted on the website CSHS Legacy.

WYSH Radio in Clinton reported that the Anderson County Board of Education has given officials at Clinton High School the go-ahead to start exploring the possibility of constructing the new multi-sport facility at no cost to taxpayers.

WYSH said the proposed project would also renovate the existing, but aging, football field house. A second and separate part of the proposed project would also renovate the Don Lockard Gymnasium. [Read more…]
