Second annual writing contest under way; scholarships available

Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church

Grace Writers of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oak Ridge is featuring its second annual writing contest in memory of two members: Carol Oen and Cleva Marrow, both Oak Ridge writers.

Carol Oen wrote poetry, freelance articles for magazines, and a senior romance novel, “Songs That Remember,” about Alzheimer’s and caregivers. She taught memoir writing for the Oak Ridge Institute of Continued Learning. Cleva Marrow freelanced for The Oak Ridger and The Knoxville News Sentinel.

Knoxville Opera’s Salesky brings program to Oak Ridge on Tuesday

Maestro Brian Salesky, executive director and conductor of Knoxville Opera, will present a dynamic program illustrating the history of opera and musical theater at Lunch with the League on Tuesday, May 17. The program starts at noon Tuesday in the sanctuary of Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church, which is located at 309 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

Salesky will be joined by two opera singers in his exposition of Opera 101, soprano Sarah Fitch and baritone Kevin Doherty. Both have performed roles in Knoxville Opera’s productions at the Tennessee Theatre and are graduates of the University of Tennessee, a press release said.

Opera 101, which can be adapted for different age groups, is one of several in the Knoxville Opera Education Program. In information provided for the upcoming program, Salesky said Knoxville Opera annually presents 75-100 education events for the community, including the recent Rossini Festival, Knoxville Opera Goes to Church, African-American Voices Series, and in-school operas, reaching up to 100,000 people. ‘Secret City Girls’ featured at AAUW luncheon Monday

Taking a cue from the book, “The Girls of the Atomic City,” by Denise Kiernan, the Monday luncheon program of the AAUW Oak Ridge Branch will feature a panel of Girls of the Secret City, a press release said.

Colleen Black, Lynn Fortenbery, Cleva Marrow, and Dot Wilkinson will share their experiences about how they came to Oak Ridge from various states and the early days in the new community and their varied jobs, the release said. They will talk about their first impressions of Oak Ridge and happenings in their new home town. [Read more…]
