The Boys and Girls Club of Oak Ridge has seen some major changes during the last few months. From the recent efforts to reinvigorate the football and cheerleading program to adding a dance classes to the after-school program, big things have been happening for the kids involved.

Effective Nov. 1, the umbrella corporation Boys and Girls Clubs of the Clinch Valley, which oversees operations at the Oak Ridge unit and the brand new Roane County Unit located at Harriman Middle School, hired Dean Deatherage as CPO of the organization. Deatherage is a native of Knoxville, and his mother Carolyn Montgomery is a former assistant principal of Jefferson Middle School. He has been involved in the Boys and Girls Club movement for more than 10 years, most recently serving as executive director for the Loudon County Club. [Read more…]

ORHS basketball clinic for Boys, Girls Club league on Monday

Coach Aaron Green and the Oak Ridge High School basketball staff are hosting a free basketball skills camp on Monday for the Boys and Girls Club league.

The clinic is for children from kindergarten to seventh grade, and it’s from 6-7 p.m. Monday at the Oak Ridge High School Wildcat Arena. There is a coaches’ question-and-answer session from 7 to 7:30 p.m.

Boys and Girls Club has fall festival Friday

The Boys and Girls Club of Oak Ridge has its fourth annual fall festival on Friday.

The festival is at the club from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, and it costs $4. That includes unlimited time in the bounce house, a cake walk, one trip through each of the program areas, and a hot dog, chips, and drink. Extra tickets for the haunted house can be bought for $1.

Each program area will be filled with exciting activities and delicious treats, and there will be an obstacle course and corn hole tournament, organizers said. [Read more…]

Boys and Girls Club raffle features Coach Gaddis, $10,000 grand prize

The Boys and Girls Club of Oak Ridge is holding a reverse raffle on Saturday, July 27, at Lincoln’s Sports Grille. The grand prize is $10,000.

The special guest master of ceremonies is Oak Ridge High School Football Coach Joe Gaddis.

“If anyone hasn’t had the opportunity to welcome Coach Gaddis back, this would be a great opportunity to do so,” said Ann Likens, chief volunteer officer of the Oak Ridge Unit Board. “This is always a fun event for the people that attend, and we think this year will be even more so. We really want the community to come out, have some fun, and support the Boys and Girls Club.” [Read more…]

Boys and Girls Club has annual spring picnic today

The Boys and Girls Club of Oak Ridge will have its annual spring picnic from 5 to 7:30 p.m. today at 102 South Jefferson Circle.

The all-you-can-eat picnic is $5, and it will include hamburgers and hot dogs and the opportunity to watch some youth baseball, a press release said.

Oak Ridge Boys Club alumni have kickoff party Friday

The Oak Ridge Boys Club Alumni Association has their annual membership drive and kickoff party at Lincoln’s Sports Grille at 7 p.m. Friday.

The alumni have been an essential part of helping the local Boys and Girls Club of Oak Ridge during the last four decades, with recent efforts including the purchase of a 15-passenger van for transporting children to the club from school, a press release said.

Boys Club Alumni have first annual Christmas party Saturday

The Boys Club Alumni Association will host its first annual Christmas party on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Club of Oak Ridge.

Alumni members will help with the annual Christmas tree sales on the baseball field in front of the building, a press release said.

“We will be selling barbecue and trees this year in an effort to help raise money for the club,” Boys Club Alumni President Aaron Wells said.

Golf tournament on Saturday benefits Boys and Girls Club

The Oak Ridge Country Club is hosting the Lawrence Hahn Golf Classic on Saturday starting at 1:30 p.m. This event is to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Oak Ridge.

There will be longest and straightest drive contests, an awards dinner, $10,000 in gifts and prizes, and a chance to win $1 million, which will be split with the Boys and Girls Club, according to promotional materials for the event.
