Oak Ridge Education Foundation donates $81,000 to city schools

The Oak Ridge Public Schools Education Foundation presented a check for $81,000 to the Oak Ridge Schools at the Foundation’s award ceremony Friday evening. The funds will be used to provide a variety of educational materials in each of the city’s seven public schools.

Oak Ridge National Laboratory Director and Foundation Chair Thom Mason told an audience of more than 150 attending the event that the gift was part of the Foundation’s “Making a Critical Difference” campaign that provides teachers small grants for teaching tools not available in the city’s education budget. Mason said that, since the program began in 2004, the Foundation has awarded a total of more than $408,000 to dozens of teachers in every grade. [Read more…]

ORNL recognizes small business subcontractors and supporters

Oak Ridge National Laboratory honored seven small businesses and their supporters at its annual small business awards ceremony on March 22. The winning firms were nominated by ORNL staff in recognition of the companies’ exceptional service during the 2012 fiscal year.

Rep. Chuck Fleischmann and John Hale, deputy director of DOE’s Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization in the Office of Economic Impact and Diversity, were guest speakers at the breakfast event. [Read more…]

Y-12 inventors receive awards

A dozen people were recognized for receiving U.S. Patent and Trademark Office patents during the ninth annual Y-12 Technology Transfer awards ceremony, held to celebrate fiscal year 2012 achievements, and 74 were honored for submitting invention disclosures.

The year was a record-breaking one for new patents at Y‑12, with 11 awarded. The Silver Acorn Award, bestowed upon first-time patent recipients, went to Ed Babelay, Bill Barkman, Amy DeMint, Jackie Gooch, Patrick Thomas, and Paul Vanatta.
