Dewey Pyles, age 61, of Clinton, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2013, at his residence in Clinton.

Dewey was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He collected and loved hot wheels.

Carlotta Woodby, age 66, of New Lexington, Ohio, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2013, at her daughter’s residence in Oliver Springs.

Carlotta loved making crafts, playing with her grandchildren, and visiting her family in Tennessee. She was a well-loved mother, grandmother, and sister.

Dorothy Alene Conrad

Dorothy Alene Conrad, age 85, a resident of the Life Care Center of Morgan County, went home to be with the Lord and family on Monday, Aug. 26, 2013.

Mrs. Conrad was born on Sept. 4, 1927, in Morgan County. She lived throughout her life in Coalfield, Oliver Springs, and Middletown, Ohio.

She was a homemaker, a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who enjoyed pampering her family and those who came through her door. She was a gracious hostess and cook, and the holidays were always a special time because she cherished visits from all.

While living in Middletown, Ohio she attended the Grace Baptist Church. [Read more…]

Thomas Eugene Zava

Thomas Eugene Zava passed away at 9:30 Tuesday morning, Sept. 10, at Park West Medical Center.

He was born in Victoria (Lunenburg County), Va., on Sept. 16, 1922. Tom’s parents immigrated from Europe in the early 1920s, and Tom held the distinction and privilege of being the first in his Albanian family to be born in America.

Tom graduated with honors from Victoria High School in 1940 and received a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from the University of Richmond in 1944.

Tom was a veteran of World War II. He received his basic training in Camp Barkley, Texas, and Medical Corp training at Ft. Benjamin Harris, Ind. He then received secret orders to report to the Manhattan District, Special Engineering Detachment in Oak Ridge. He was the only serviceman selected from the state of Virginia to serve in the SED.

In 1984, Tom retired from K-25 after 40 years of service in chemistry and analytical labs as a technician and supervisor throughout K-25. [Read more…]

James Allen Hodges, “Partner,” age 82, of Oak Ridge, passed away Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013 at the Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

He worked at the Oak Ridge Hospital in the ’60s and 70s in the housekeeping department and also worked for ORAU as a janitor until his retirement. He was born to the late Sam and Fannie Pitchford Hodges in Lexington, Miss., on Jan. 1, 1931.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Jeanette Redmond, Sally Berry, Nancy Hodges, Eula Mae Horton, and Pearl Pitchford; and brothers, Lemon Hodges, Aker Hodges, Floyd Hodges, William Hodges, and Jimmy Hodges. [Read more…]

World War II Vet, Fisherman, and ORNL Retiree

Dock Aldridge Stewart Sr., 92, fisherman for life, departed this life on Sept. 5, 2013, surrounded by his family at home. He was born on Oct. 26, 1920, to the late Wesley and Amanda Stewart, in Baldwyn, Miss. He is preceded in death by his wife, Ocie Lee Stewart; elder son, Dock Stewart Jr.; sisters, Margaret Richardson and Desmond Stewart; and brother, Anderson Stewart.

Mr. Stewart (known as “Dock”) came to Oak Ridge in the early 1940s and lived in the hutments. He retired from Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where he worked in the plant and equipment division for 36 years. He drove trucks in the Army and was a World War II veteran. Dock spoke enthusiastically of traveling abroad to Scotland, England (where he met and traveled with Joe Louis), Belgium, France, Germany, and Australia. An excellent soldier, he was the recipient of the American Defense Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Asian Theater of Operations Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, and the Meritorious Unit Award. Dock’s loving devotion to his family and friends was steadfast, and his faith and trust allowed him to live life to the fullest. Recent health issues increasingly limited his life but not his spirit and good humor. He was an excellent example of compassion, patience, and commitment. He will be missed very much by his family, the Scarboro Community, and those who knew him. “Dock was a Hero.” [Read more…]

Barry Guy Jones, age 63, a resident of Anderson County, passed away Thursday, Sept. 12, 2013, at Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge.

Barry was born Jan. 7, 1950, in Oak Ridge. He was a lifelong resident of Anderson County.

Before his retirement, he was employed as a cardio-defibrillator sales representative.

Barry loved to laugh and have fun. He had a great zest for life, and he found many ways to entertain himself. He was a outgoing man with varied interest and many friends. [Read more…]

Thelma Rose Silvey, age 81, a resident of Oliver Springs, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 10, at her home.

Mrs. Silvey was born Aug. 8, 1932 in Harlan, Ky. She has lived in Oliver Springs since early childhood.

She was a homemaker, a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. She was a member of the Indian Creek Baptist Church.

Dorothy Mae Robbins

Dorothy Mae Robbins, age 86, of Oak Ridge, passed away Saturday, Sept. 7, at Shannondale Health Care Center in Knoxville.

She was born June 21, 1927, in Huntsville, Ala., the daughter of Marlin Gaston Buchanan and Ida Mae Damron Buchanan.

Mrs. Robbins was a former assistant director for the Oak Ridge Downtown Management Corp. She later worked as an inspector at the Aid to Distressed Families of Appalachian Counties (ADFAC) until the age of 85, when her health began to fail. [Read more…]
